Chapter 7 - The Mistress's True Colors

Inside the high-security federal detention center downtown, Major Chloe Miller sat at a cold steel interrogation table, her wrists secured to a central ring by polished steel handcuffs. The sleek designer silk dress she had worn to my hospital room was gone, replaced by a dark orange institutional jumpsuit.

I stepped into the room, accompanied by Major Daniel Reed. I wore my operational service dress, my Brigadier General rank gleaming under the harsh overhead fluorescent lights.

Chloe looked up as I entered. The arrogant smirk that had defined her demeanor in my hospital room was completely gone. Her eyes were dark, shadowed with exhaustion and fear.

"General Carter," Chloe whispered, her voice dry and rasping.

I sat down across from her, laying a thin electronic dossier onto the table. "Major Miller. Or should I address you by your foreign intelligence handle, Operative Sable?"

Chloe flinched, her shoulders slumping in total surrender. "You knew... you knew before you even went into labor, didn't you?"

"My counter-intelligence unit began tracking your financial anomalies six months ago," I said calmly. "We watched you approach my husband at that charity gala. We watched you convince him that you were an international heiress. You thought you were brilliant, Chloe. You thought you were using an arrogant, ambitious civilian businessman to smuggle defense secrets through his shipping routes."

"Jason was so shockingly easy to manipulate," Chloe sneered, a bit of her venomous personality surfacing. "All I had to do was wear expensive clothes, talk about high society, and compliment his fragile ego. He hated you, Emily. He complained about you every single night. He talked about how plain you were, how boring your government job was, how you lacked ambition."

"I know what he thought of me," I replied without a trace of anger. "And that was precisely why I let the operation play out. Your arrogance made you sloppy. You assumed because Jason was stupid, his quiet wife was equally blind."

"He thought I was his ticket to billionaire status," Chloe laughed bitterly, shaking her head. "He literally threw you out into the rain because he believed I was going to buy him a thirty-million-dollar yacht for his birthday. The fool didn't even check if my offshore corporate entities were real!"

"And now he is facing federal conspiracy charges because he signed every manifest you put in front of him," Major Reed added firmly.

Chloe looked directly at me, her eyes filled with desperate pleading. "Emily... General. I can give you the names of my handlers in Eastern Europe. I can give you the encrypted access codes for their financial networks. Just drop the military court-martial charges. Don't send me to a military prison for twenty years!"

I stood up, pulling my gloves back onto my hands, looking down at her with absolute indifference. "You made your choice, Major Miller. You betrayed your oath to the United States Military, and you attempted to destroy my family for foreign cash. You will stand trial before a full military tribunal, and you will serve every single day of your sentence."

"Wait! Please!" Chloe screamed, reaching across the table as far as her handcuffs would allow. "Jason believed everything I said! He ruined his own life for a lie! Doesn't that satisfy you?!"

"I didn't care about satisfying vengeance," I said as I reached the door. "I care about justice. And justice has arrived for both of you."

I walked out of the interrogation room, leaving Chloe sobbing hysterically into her chains.

Out in the hallway, Major Reed turned to me. "General, Jason Vance's defense attorney just called our legal team. He is begging for a settlement conference. Jason is facing immediate indictment by the grand jury tomorrow morning, and he wants to sign over all parental rights, property claims, and marital assets if you agree to write a character statement mitigating his federal sentence."

I stopped walking, looking out through the reinforced window of the facility. "Tell his attorney that Brigadier General Emily Carter does not make deals with traitors or deadbeats. Let the law take its full, unyielding course."
