Chapter 10 - Confrontation in the Shadows

The video exploded across the internet like a wildfire.

Within twelve hours, Naomi's video had reached over half a million views. The community page that had previously condemned her immediately removed the slanderous post and issued an official apology.

Commenters who had attacked her were now leaving thousands of supportive messages:

"She brought the RECEIPTS!"

"Her brother belongs in prison!"

"Saint Jude Hospital needs to reinstate her immediately!"

By noon on Friday, Director Marcus Vance called Naomi personally. His tone was entirely different—nervous, apologetic, and eager.

"Miss Carter," Vance said stammering, "we have reviewed the evidence you published. Your administrative leave is immediately revoked with full back pay. We would be honored to have you return to your post on Monday."

"Thank you, Director Vance," Naomi replied coolly. "I will see you Monday morning."

When she hung up, she felt a profound sense of victory. She had saved her career. She had vindicated her honor.

However, a cornered animal is always at its most dangerous.

At 9:00 p.m. that night, Naomi drove back to 412 Elmwood Drive after picking up takeout dinner. The street was quiet, shrouded in winter fog. As she pulled into her driveway and turned off the engine, she noticed that the motion-sensor porch light had been unscrewed.

Naomi froze, her heart instantly racing.

She reached for her phone to call 911, but before she could press dial, her driver-side window was violently shattered by a heavy iron tire iron.

Glass exploded inward, showering Naomi's face and arms.

A hand reached through the broken window, grabbing her coat collar and dragging her against the door frame.

"You ruined me!" Mark screamed, his face contorted in maniacal rage, smelling heavily of bourbon. "You put my face on the news! The police are looking for me!"

Naomi screamed, fighting back, kicking blindly at the door. "Mark! Stop! Get off me!"

"You think you are going to win?!" Mark roared, raising the tire iron above his head. "I will kill you before I go to prison!"
