Chapter 13 - The Reckoning at the Bedside

Two days later, Naomi received a phone call from St. Jude's Cardiac Unit. Her father, Arthur Carter, had suffered a stress-induced myocardial infarction—a heart attack—and was admitted to intensive care.

Despite everything, Naomi was a nurse. She walked down the hospital corridors to the third floor, stopping outside Room 304.

Arthur lay in the hospital bed, hooked up to heart monitors, looking tiny against the white sheets. When he heard the door open and saw Naomi standing there, his eyes welled with tears.

"Naomi..." he whispered weakly, reaching out a trembling, pale hand.

Naomi walked over, but she didn't take his hand. She stood at the side of the bed, her arms folded.

"The doctor said you're stable," Naomi said professionally. "The stent was placed successfully."

"I'm sorry, Naomi," Arthur wept, his chest heaving under the gown. "I am so... so sorry."

Naomi looked at him silently. "What are you sorry for, Dad?"

"Everything," he sobbed. "I was weak. When I lost my business five years ago, I felt like a complete failure. Mark... Mark was my son. I wanted so badly for him to succeed so I could feel like a good father again. I ignored everything he did wrong. I let him take your money. I let him speak to you like trash."

"And when he hit me?" Naomi asked, her voice cracking slightly. "Why didn't you stand up?"

Arthur closed his eyes in deep shame. "Because I was terrified he would leave and never talk to me again. I sacrificed my relationship with my best child to hold onto a son who was destroying us all."

Naomi took a deep breath. Hearing her father finally admit the truth brought no joy, but it brought profound clarity.

"Dad," Naomi said softly, "I forgive you for being weak. But I will not fix Mark's mess. He is going to trial, and I will testify against him."

Arthur nodded slowly, tears running down into his gray beard. "I know. He needs to face it. We both do."

Naomi leaned down and kissed his forehead gently. "Get better, Dad. But when you leave this hospital, you need to learn to stand on your own two feet."

She turned and walked out of the room, leaving the ghosts of her childhood behind her forever.
