Chapter 8 - The Calculated Counterstrike

When Naomi returned to Daniel Mercer's legal office an hour later, she was no longer crying. The sorrow that had weighed her down for weeks had completely burned away, replaced by a cold, surgical fury.

She laid her phone on Mercer's desk, displaying the viral Facebook post and the suspension order from Saint Jude.

"They're coming after my career now," Naomi said, her voice dripping with ice. "Mark wants to destroy everything I've built."

Mercer looked at the screen, then at Naomi. A slow, approving smile touched his lips. "Good."

"Good?" Naomi repeated.

"Before this, your brother was just a nuisance committing minor domestic offenses," Mercer explained, leaning back in his leather chair. "But by posting false statements that directly cause you financial harm and professional suspension, he has crossed into severe defamation per se and tortious interference."

Mercer pressed a button on his intercom. "Sarah, get me Investigator Miller on the line."

Ten minutes later, a lean man in his mid-forties named Ray Miller walked into the office carrying a laptop. Miller was a former police detective who now specialized in digital forensics and asset tracing.

"What do we have, Daniel?" Miller asked.

"Mark Carter," Mercer said. "I need every piece of financial history, online activity, and bank transaction associated with his name over the last three years. I want to know where his money came from and where it went."

Miller sat down and opened his laptop. "Give me twenty-four hours."

While Miller worked, Naomi and Mercer drafted a formal Cease and Desist notice, accompanied by a public correction demand sent directly to the administrators of the community Facebook pages.

By five o'clock the next afternoon, Ray Miller walked back into Mercer's office with a thick yellow folder.

His expression was grim.

"You're not going to believe what this guy has been doing, Naomi," Miller said, dropping the folder onto the desk.

Naomi opened it. Inside were copies of bank statements, corporate filings, and loan applications bearing the name "Carter NextGen Tech Solutions LLC."

"Your brother wasn't just unemployed," Miller revealed. "He's been running a fraudulent investment scheme. He collected over $150,000 from local retirees, claiming he was building a medical software platform."

Naomi gasped. "Where did he say the collateral was coming from?"

Miller pointed to a signature line on a private loan agreement dated eight months ago. "Right here. He listed 412 Elmwood Drive as corporate collateral."

Naomi looked at the signature on the bottom of the page. It was her name, written in elegant cursive.

Except Naomi had never seen this document in her life.

"He forged my signature," Naomi whispered, horror gripping her throat. "He pledged my house to secure an illegal loan.
