Chapter 6 - The Whispers of Rebellion

By Thursday morning, the atmosphere at the hospital had changed noticeably.

Naomi walked into Saint Jude Memorial Hospital for her morning shift, dressed in her blue scrubs. As she walked past the triage desk, two junior nurses who usually greeted her warmly suddenly lowered their heads and began whispering to each other.

Naomi paused, frowning, but brushed it off as standard hospital gossip.

However, when she entered the breakroom, the silence was immediate and suffocating. Three senior staff members looked up at her with expressions ranging from shock to cold disdain.

"Good morning," Naomi said cautiously.

No one answered. Nurse Brenda, a woman Naomi had worked beside for three years, gathered her belongings and walked out without making eye contact.

"What is going on?" Naomi asked Tessa when they met near the pharmacy station ten minutes later.

Tessa looked pale, holding her tablet in her hands. "Naomi... have you logged onto Facebook or the local community forum today?"

"No, I was painting all night. Why?"

Tessa handed her the tablet. "Look at this. It was posted four hours ago."

Naomi took the screen. Her eyes widened in horror as she read the headline of a viral post on the town's largest community page:

"HOSPITAL NURSE EVICTS FRAIL AGING PARENTS ONTO STREETS AFTER STEALING THEIR LIFE SAVINGS."

The post was written under an anonymous profile, but the details were terrifyingly specific. It featured photos of Arthur and Elaine sitting on cheap beds in a rundown motel, looking utterly broken and frail. The post claimed that Naomi Carter, a registered nurse at Saint Jude, had emotionally manipulated her elderly parents into putting their family home in her name, only to kick them out during the winter after taking all their money.

Worst of all, there were hundreds of comments:

"This monster takes care of sick people?!"

"She should have her nursing license revoked!"

"I'm calling Saint Jude right now to demand she be fired!"

"Absolute trash! Someone should give her a taste of her own medicine!"

Naomi felt the blood drain entirely from her face. "This was Mark," she whispered. "He took these photos at their motel."

"It's everywhere, Naomi," Tessa said fiercely. "It's been shared over two thousand times. People are calling the hospital administration."

Before Naomi could respond, the intercom above her head chimed.

"Nurse Naomi Carter, please report to the Administrative Office immediately. Nurse Naomi Carter to Administration."

Tessa grabbed her arm. "I'm coming with you."

"No," Naomi said, forcing herself to stand tall despite the dizziness in her head. "I have to face this myself."
