Chapter 16 - The Verdict of Freedom

When court reconvened, Prosecutor Jenkins stood up for cross-examination of Victor Vance.

"Mr. Vance," Jenkins said smoothly, walking toward the witness stand. "You claim Miss Carter signed this contract in your presence on March 14th?"

"Yes, ma'am," Victor lied confidently. "In my office."

"That's interesting," Jenkins said, turning to the judge. "Your Honor, the prosecution requests permission to present State's Exhibit 42—a forensic analysis of the defense's document."

Over the next thirty minutes, Ray Miller took the stand as an expert witness. He demonstrated to the jury, step-by-step, how the contract had been digitally forged four days prior using a stolen signature from a birthday card.

The judge's face turned thunderous.

"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You are hereby remanded into custody for perjury and falsifying evidence in a felony proceeding. Bailiffs, take him."

Victor Vance turned pale as handcuffs were slapped onto his wrists right on the witness stand. He was dragged out screaming, "Mark told me to do it! Mark paid me five thousand dollars!"

Mark Carter slumped in his chair, his face completely drained of color.

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

When they returned, the jury foreperson stood up. "On the count of Grand Larceny, we find the defendant Guilty. On the count of Felony Forgery, Guilty. On the count of Violation of a Protective Order, Guilty. On the count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, we find the defendant... GUILTY."

Elaine Carter let out a sharp shriek in the courtroom gallery, weeping hysterically.

The judge looked down at Mark with severe disgust.

"Mark Carter, you have shown a terrifying lack of remorse, a predatory exploitation of your own family, and a willingness to commit violence to escape accountability. I sentence you to eighteen years in the State Penitentiary without the possibility of parole for ten years."

The gavel banged down with a deafening crack.

Mark was led away in heavy chains, sobbing hysterically, calling out, "Mom! Help me! Mom!"
