Chapter 7 - Venom on the Web

The administrative office of Saint Jude Hospital was cold and lined with framed medical degrees. Behind the large mahogany desk sat Director Marcus Vance, a stern, corporate man whose primary concern was always the hospital's public image.

Beside him sat Dr. Julian Cross, the Chief of Emergency Medicine.

"Sit down, Naomi," Director Vance said, pointing to an empty chair.

Naomi sat, keeping her back straight. "Director Vance, if this is about the social media post—"

"It is precisely about the social media post," Vance interrupted sharply, turning his computer monitor toward her. "Our public relations desk has received over eighty phone calls this morning. Local news outlets are asking for a statement regarding an employee allegedly abusing elderly family members."

"It's a lie," Naomi said firmly. "It is a deliberate smear campaign orchestrated by my brother."

"Naomi," Vance said coldly, "the public doesn't care about family drama. They see a Saint Jude nurse featured in a viral story about elder abuse. This damages the reputation of this hospital."

"I have legal proof!" Naomi insisted, her voice rising slightly. "I own the deed! My brother physically assaulted me—I have a police report and a restraining order!"

"That is a civil and criminal matter for the courts," Vance countered unemotionally. "As of right now, you are a PR liability. Effective immediately, you are being placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an internal review."

Naomi felt as if she had been slapped all over again. "Unpaid leave? Director Vance, I have done nothing wrong! I am the victim here!"

"My decision is final, Miss Carter," Vance said, opening a file folder. "Please hand over your security badge."

Naomi stared at him, her chest heaving. She reached for her badge, her fingers shaking with humiliation.

"Wait a minute, Marcus."

The deep, calm voice belonged to Dr. Julian Cross.

Julian had been silent until now, studying the situation with sharp brown eyes. He leaned forward, placing his hands on Vance's desk.

"You're suspending one of our best trauma nurses based on unverified internet gossip?" Julian asked, his tone laced with dangerous authority.

"It's about risk management, Julian," Vance replied smoothly.

"No, it's about cowardice," Julian shot back. "Naomi came to work two weeks ago with a severe bruise on her face. I saw it myself. She didn't miss a single shift. She saved three cardiac patients last night alone. You're going to throw her under the bus because some internet trolls called your office?"

"Dr. Cross, remember your place—" Vance began.

"My place is running the Emergency Department," Julian interrupted coldly. "And I refuse to let you destroy a dedicated nurse's career without giving her time to clear her name."

Julian turned to Naomi, his eyes warm and steadfast. "Go home, Naomi. Take three days. Get your lawyer, gather your evidence, and bring it back here. I will personally make sure Vance reviews every single document."

Naomi looked at Julian, deeply moved by his unexpected support. "Thank you, Dr. Cross."

"Three days, Miss Carter," Vance muttered reluctantly. "Not a day more.
