Chapter 11 - Face to Face with the Beast

The rain pounded against the massive glass walls of the Reforma penthouse, sending long streaks of water reflecting the red emergency lights blaring across Mexico City. General Rivera sat back in his leather executive chair, looking at Andrés as if he were nothing more than an uninvited guest at a dinner party.
"Drop your weapon, Captain," General Rivera said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his cognac. "You've made a valiant effort, but this is where your little crusade ends."
Andrés kept his rifle raised, his sights locked firmly on Rivera's chest. "It ends when you're in handcuffs, General. Or in a body bag."
Rivera laughed, a rich, booming sound devoid of warmth. "Handcuffs? You think the legal system applies to men like me? I command three divisions of the Federal Military. I sit on the National Security Council. Every judge, prosecutor, and politician in this city either works for me or fears me. Your father didn't understand how power works in the modern world, Andrés. He thought honor and rules mattered. Look where it got him—six feet under in a unmarked grave."
"My father died an honorable man," Andrés said, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You are a traitor who sold his country for lithium mining rights and Panamanian bank accounts."
"Honor doesn't build empires, Andrés!" Rivera barked, his eyes flashing with sudden rage. "Your father was going to expose a twenty-billion-dollar energy development deal that will power this country for the next century! He was willing to destroy everything over a few displaced villages in the Sierra! I did what was necessary for the greater good!"
"You hired a sociopath to marry me, torture my mother, and poison my father!" Andrés shouted, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "Is that what you call the greater good?!"
"Renata was an effective tool," Rivera sneered dismissively. "She got greedy, and Esteban was a coward. But they served their purpose. And now, you've brought the cipher card right to my front door."
Rivera made a subtle gesture with his hand.
Instantly, 'El Archivero' moved with blinding speed. The massive security chief threw a heavy steel tactical pen directly at Andrés’s face. Andrés instinctively dodged, the metallic missile grazing his cheek, but the distraction was all 'El Archivero' needed. He lunged forward, his combat knife flashing in the red light, slashing downward toward Andrés's throat.
Andrés raised his rifle to block the blade. The heavy knife bit deep into the tactical rifle's composite frame, jamming the firing mechanism. Andrés kicked out viciously, striking 'El Archivero' in the chest, forcing the giant back two steps, but the rifle was rendered useless.
Andrés dropped the broken weapon, drawing his combat blade in a single, fluid motion.
"Kill him," Rivera ordered calmly from his desk, refilling his cognac glass. "Make it slow."
'El Archivero' smiled, revealing a row of silver-capped teeth. He lunged again, executing a rapid combination of knife strikes honed through decades of mercenary warfare. Andrés parried the strikes, metal clashing against metal in a spray of sparks, the two men moving in a deadly dance across the marble floor.
'El Archivero' was heavier and possessed superior reach, but Andrés had spent four months fighting in tight Sierra ravines where speed and survival instincts were everything. Andrés ducked under a lethal horizontal slash, stepped inside the giant's guard, and drove his blade deep into the mercenary's shoulder joint, disabling his primary knife arm.
'El Archivero' grunted in pain, but barely flinched. He grabbed Andrés by the tactical vest with his left hand, lifting him off his feet, and threw him forcefully against the heavy glass wall. The impact cracked the reinforced glass, sending shockwaves through the window.
Andrés hit the floor hard, his knife sliding across the room out of reach.
'El Archivero' picked up his fallen blade with his left hand, walking toward Andrés with a cold, predatory stride. "End of the line, Captain."
As the giant raised the knife to strike, a loud shatter echoed across the penthouse.
The ceiling glass skylight exploded downward in a shower of heavy shards as Major Vargas rappelled down from a military helicopter hovering above the tower, his tactical rifle firing three precise rounds into 'El Archivero's torso.
The giant mercenary collapsed onto the marble floor, dead before he hit the ground.
General Rivera’s calm demeanor instantly evaporated. He stood up, dropping his cognac glass, which shattered on the floor, his face twisting in genuine terror as armed Special Forces operators poured down ropes into the penthouse suite.
Andrés pushed himself up from the floor, wiping blood from his lip, and picked up his tactical sidearm. He walked over to General Rivera's desk, placing the barrel of his pistol directly between the General's eyes.

"It's over, Rivera," Andrés said softly. "Your empire just collapsed."
