Chapter 6 - The Shadow Master

The Grand Horizon Hotel was a towering, glass-fronted luxury skyscraper in the heart of Guadalajara’s financial district. On the thirty-second floor, inside a lavish executive suite overlooking the bustling city skyline, Esteban Vance poured two glasses of aged scotch. He was a handsome man in his late thirties, possessing the slick charisma of a high-end corporate executive.

He checked his gold Rolex watch, frowning slightly. Renata was forty-five minutes late.

Suddenly, the electronic lock on the suite door chimed, and the heavy door swung open. Esteban turned with a smooth smile, expecting to see Renata carrying the finalized legal conservatorship documents.

Instead, Captain Andrés Robles stepped into the room.

Behind Andrés stood two towering, muscular men in tailored dark suits—Major Vargas and a elite tactical operative. Andrés walked into the suite with supreme confidence, scanning the room before fixing his lethal gaze directly on Esteban.

Esteban’s smile evaporated instantly. He set his scotch glass down on the glass table, his body going rigid. "Who the hell are you? This is a private executive suite. Get the hell out before I call hotel security!"

Andrés didn't slow his stride. He walked straight up to Esteban, stopping just inches away. "You must be Esteban Vance. Or should I say... Renata's husband?"

Esteban’s eyes flared with shock, but he quickly tried to maintain his composed facade. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a senior partner at Vance Global Investments. If you're a friend of Renata's, you need to leave right now."

Without saying a word, Andrés reached into his jacket, pulled out a thick folder, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. The folder burst open, scattering high-resolution photographs, marriage certificates from a registry in South America, offshore bank routing numbers, and certified police reports.

"Renata Cruz and Esteban Vance," Andrés read in a cold, measured voice. "Married six years ago in Bogota. Worked together in three different countries operating complex financial fraud schemes targeting wealthy military families and elderly estate owners. You find vulnerable families, Renata marries into them, you forge legal power-of-attorney documents, poison the victim mentally or physically, liquidate their assets, and disappear."

Esteban looked down at the photographs showing him and Renata together on a private yacht in Cancun two years ago—while Andrés was deployed in the Middle East.

"You've been very thorough, Captain," Esteban said, his voice losing its polished warm tone, replaced by a cold, calculating edge. He slowly backed toward the heavy mahogany desk where his leather briefcase rested. "But you're out of your depth here. This isn't the Sierra desert. You can't just shoot your way out of a legal dispute."

"This isn't a legal dispute, Esteban," Andrés replied calmly. "This is a domestic war zone. And you invaded my home."

"Your father's estate belongs to us now anyway," Esteban sneered, reaching discreetly toward the open drawer of the desk. "The wire transfers were initiated two hours ago. Over three million dollars have already cleared through the Panamanian clearing house. By tomorrow morning, that money will be completely untraceable. You're too late, Captain!"

Esteban’s hand suddenly darted into the drawer, pulling out a sleek black semi-automatic pistol.

But Andrés was a seasoned Special Forces operator. Before Esteban could even raise the barrel, Andrés closed the distance with terrifying speed. He grabbed Esteban's wrist, twisting it inward with brutal force. A sharp *SNAP* echoed through the suite, accompanied by Esteban's blood-curdling scream of agony.

The pistol dropped onto the plush carpet. Andrés drove a devastating knee into Esteban's midsection, sending the fraudster crashing over the desk, scattering papers and expensive decor across the floor.

Major Vargas stepped forward, instantly securing the handgun and placing a heavy boot on Esteban's chest, pinning him to the ground as he gasped for air, his broken wrist limp at his side.

"You think your wire transfers went through?" Andrés asked, kneeling next to the groaning man. He pulled out his smartphone and displayed the live bank interface screen. "My family accountant froze every transfer four hours ago under federal anti-money laundering protocols. Every single peso is locked down. Astra Management has been blacklisted by the Central Bank."

Esteban coughed up a fleck of blood, staring up at Andrés with pure hatred and fear. "You... you think this ends with me? Renata... she isn't just working for me, you idiot! We were hired by someone far higher than us! Someone in your own military command!"

Andrés froze. The temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing.

"What did you just say?" Andrés demanded, grabbing Esteban by his collar and pulling him up.

"Your father... General Hector... was murdered three years ago!" Esteban wheezed out, terror forcing the truth from his lips. "It wasn't a heart attack! Someone in the High Command wanted his secret files on the Sierra mineral land deals! They hired us to get into his house and find his private cipher key!"

Andrés felt a jolt of shock rip through his body. His father's sudden death three years ago—the sudden cardiac arrest that had brought Andrés back from his foreign deployment—had been a foul play.

"Who hired you, Esteban?" Andrés roared, pulling the man higher, his eyes wild with lethal rage. "GIVE ME A NAME!"

Before Esteban could answer, a loud explosion echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the rapid chatter of automatic gunfire tearing through the luxury suite's double doors.
