Chapter 8 - The Mask Comes Off

By five in the afternoon, thunderclouds rolled over the mountains surrounding Zapopan, casting the city in a cold, slate-grey shadow. Rain began to pour in heavy sheets, rattling against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Robles villa.

Inside the master bedroom, Renata paced like a trapped animal. Her phone had been dead for hours, stripped of service by Andrés's jammer devices stationed around the perimeter. She had tried to leave through the back garden, only to be met by two silent, stone-faced military guards who politely but firmly escorted her back inside.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the bedroom swung open.

Andrés stood in the doorway. His tactical uniform was covered in drywall dust, faint bloodstains marked his sleeves, and his eyes carried an intensity so terrifying that Renata instinctively retreated until her back hit the wall.

"Andrés..." Renata whispered, her voice trembling. "What happened to you? Where have you been?"

Andrés didn't speak immediately. He stepped into the room, walked over to the armchair, and sat down slowly, resting his forearms on his knees. He stared at her in complete silence for a long, grueling minute.

"I just came back from the Grand Horizon Hotel," Andrés said, his tone ominously gentle. "Esteban was very talkative, Renata. Especially after his wrist got broken."

Renata’s eyes widened in sheer horror. She clutched her dress, her breathing becoming fast and shallow. "Esteban... he... he lied to you, Andrés! Whatever he said, he was trying to save himself!"

"He told me about Bogota six years ago," Andrés continued, ignoring her protest. "He told me about your corporate fraud schemes in South America. And he told me about 'El Archivero'."

The moment that name left Andrés's lips, Renata's defensive, tearful act vanished completely. The desperate, pleading wife disappeared. Her expression hardened into a cold, contemptuous sneer. She slowly straightened her posture, brushing her loose hair behind her ears with chilling composure.

"So," Renata spat, her voice laced with venom. "The noble soldier finally figured it out. I was wondering how long it would take your slow military brain to catch up."

"You weren't just after my mother's money," Andrés said, watching her carefully. "You were planted in my life to find my father's cipher key."

Renata let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Of course, you idiot! You think I would waste three years of my life playing house with a boring, emotionally stunted military officer for a few million pesos? Your father stole something worth hundreds of millions of dollars from powerful people in Mexico City. Files that could bring down generals, cabinet ministers, and defense contractors!"

"And my father's death?" Andrés asked, his hands clenching into tight fists. "Did you poison him too?"

Renata smirked, a cruel, mocking smile that made Andrés's blood boil. "Your father was smart, Andrés. Much smarter than you. He suspected me from the very beginning. So when 'El Archivero' gave the order to speed things up, Dr. Valenzuela slipped a little something special into the old man's evening brandy. A synthetic potassium compound. It produces a heart attack that looks completely natural on any standard autopsy."

Hearing the full confession of his father's murder in such a callous, arrogant manner sent a wave of blinding rage through Andrés. He stood up slowly, his tall frame looming over her.

"You killed my father," Andrés said, his voice dangerously quiet.

"And what are you going to do about it, Captain?" Renata sneered, stepping closer to him, utterly devoid of fear. "Kill me? You're a decorated military hero. You bound by honor, duty, and rules. If you touch me, your career is over. You'll spend the rest of your life in a military prison!"

Andrés looked down at her with a terrifying calm that chilled Renata to her core.

"You're right, Renata," Andrés whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "I am bound by honor. But my father... my father was a spy master. And he taught me that when dealing with monsters, you don't use the law. You use their own weapons."

Andrés reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic remote device. He pressed a button.

From the hallway ceiling speakers, a crisp, crystal-clear audio recording played back in real-time—Renata's exact words, recorded seconds ago:

*‘—Dr. Valenzuela slipped a little something special into the old man's evening brandy. A synthetic potassium compound. It produces a heart attack that looks completely natural...’*

Renata’s face went dead white. She looked up at the subtle, hidden microphone concealed in the ceiling fan fixture.

"That audio feed was just broadcast live to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the State Military Court, and the Federal Police Homicide Division," Andrés said softly. "You didn't just confess to murder, Renata. You confessed to high treason and conspiracy to assassinate a federal military official."

Renata’s legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor, staring at Andrés in absolute, helpless horror.
