Chapter 14 - An Unexpected Visitor

A sleek black sedan with diplomatic license plates was parked in the driveway. The driver’s door opened, and a young woman in an elegant charcoal business suit stepped out. She had sharp brown eyes, short dark hair, and carried a leather briefcase under her arm.
Andrés recognized her instantly. It was Elena Vance—the younger sister of Esteban Vance.
Andrés’s posture hardened immediately. He stepped down from the porch, positioning himself between the car and the house. "You're a long way from home, Miss Vance. If you're here to beg for your brother's release, you're wasting your time."
Elena stopped, raising her hands in a non-threatening gesture. Her expression was calm, solemn, and completely devoid of the deceitful aura that characterized her brother and Renata.
"I'm not here to beg for Esteban, Captain Robles," Elena said, her voice steady and sincere. "In fact, I'm the one who provided the prosecutor with his offshore bank account keys in Panama three days ago."
Andrés paused, his eyes narrowing. "You turned in your own brother?"
"Esteban is a parasite," Elena said bitterly, taking a step closer. "He ruined our family's reputation years ago with his fraudulent schemes. When I learned what he and Renata were doing to your mother... locking an innocent woman away, trying to poison her... I was disgusted. I came here today to apologize to Mrs. Teresa face-to-face on behalf of what's left of my family."
Andrés evaluated her for a long moment, reading her posture and micro-expressions. He had investigated financial criminals for years, and he knew when someone was acting out of genuine remorse versus survival instinct. Elena was telling the truth.
"My mother is inside," Andrés said quietly, gesturing toward the front door. "She can decide whether she wants to hear your apology."
They walked into the living room, where Teresa was setting down a tray of chilled lemonade. Seeing the visitor, Teresa paused, looking inquiringly at her son.
"Mother, this is Elena Vance," Andrés introduced softly. "Esteban's sister."
Teresa’s expression softened slightly, though a watchful caution remained in her eyes. "Hello, my dear."
Elena walked over to Teresa, bowing her head in genuine humility. "Mrs. Robles... I cannot express how deeply ashamed I am of what my brother did to you in this house. He and Renata are monsters who deserve every year of the prison sentences they will receive. I came here to personally give you these."
Elena opened her leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of original financial deeds, vintage family photographs, and an antique gold pocket watch engraved with the crest of General Hector Robles.
Teresa gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Hector's pocket watch... where did you find this?"
"Esteban stole it from your safe three weeks ago and tried to pawn it through an underground dealer in Mexico City," Elena explained. "I intercepted it yesterday before the federal police could freeze it as evidence. It belongs to your family, Mrs. Robles. Not to evidence lockers."
Teresa took the antique pocket watch, tracing her fingers over her late husband's engraved initials. Tears welled in her eyes, but for the first time in months, they were tears of deep emotional healing rather than fear.
"Thank you, child," Teresa whispered, looking at Elena with immense warmth. "You are nothing like your brother."
"Thank you, ma'am," Elena smiled softly, turning back to Andrés. "Captain Robles... there's one more reason I came here today. My brother Esteban was a coward, but he was also meticulous about keeping digital backups. Before he was arrested, he hid a secondary encrypted server in an apartment in Guadalajara."
Andrés’s attention sharpened. "What kind of data?"
"A list of civilian enablers," Elena said, her tone growing serious. "Corrupt judges, bank managers, and real estate agents who helped Renata and Esteban falsify property deeds for the past five years. If you want to clean up this city completely, that server holds the key."
Andrés looked at Elena, seeing a strong, principled ally in an unexpected place. "Where is the apartment?"
Elena pulled out a small piece of paper with an address written on it and handed it to Andrés. "Consider it my family's repayment for the damage Esteban caused."
As Elena departed, Andrés looked down at the address in his hand. The war against the syndicate was officially over, but the work of protecting innocent families from predators like Renata and Esteban was far from finished.
He looked back at his mother, who was sitting contentedly by the window, clutching his father's watch, surrounded by sunlight.
"Are you going after them, Andrés?" Teresa asked gently from across the room.
May you like
Andrés walked over, kissing his mother's forehead. "Just closing the final chapter, Mother. Just closing the final chapter."
