Chapter 16 - A Mother's Resilience

Spring arrived in Zapopan with a brilliant explosion of purple jacaranda blossoms lining the boulevards. The Robles estate was once again full of life and warmth. The heavy black SUVs and tactical guards that had surrounded the property during the syndicate crisis were gone, replaced by a subtle, top-tier civilian security system installed directly under Andrés's supervision.

Mrs. Teresa sat in the sunlit dining room, wrapping freshly baked sweet bread in linen napkins. Her physical recovery over the past two months had been nothing short of miraculous. The bruises on her wrists had long faded, replaced by healthy color in her cheeks, and her spirit was stronger than ever.

"Andrés, dear!" Teresa called out toward the patio. "The tea is ready!"

Andrés stepped inside, wearing a crisp dark blazer and dress trousers. As the newly appointed Colonel of the Special Anti-Fraud Division, his schedule was demanding, but he made it an absolute rule to return home every evening to share dinner with his mother.

" Smells wonderful, Mother," Andrés smiled, sitting down at the dining table and pouring them both a cup of warm cinnamon tea.

Teresa looked at her son, her eyes beaming with affection. "I received a letter today from the State Women's Organization, Andrés. They've invited me to speak at their annual conference next month about elder abuse awareness and legal protection."

Andrés raised an eyebrow, surprised and deeply impressed. "That's incredible, Mother. Are you feeling up to it?"

"Up to it?" Teresa chuckled, a strong, vibrant sound that warmed Andrés's heart. "After surviving Renata and Esteban, giving a speech to a room of supportive women is going to be a walk in the park! I want to make sure no other mother ever goes through what I experienced in this house."

"They picked the right speaker," Andrés said proudly, touching her hand. "You're tougher than most of the operators in my Special Forces unit."

"I had a good teacher," Teresa winked, gesturing to the framed photograph of General Hector Robles on the mantelpiece. "Your father always said that strength isn't about how much pain you can inflict on others—it's about how much adversity you can stand up against to protect the people you love."

As they enjoyed their evening, the front doorbell chimed. Andrés stood up and walked to the entryway, checking the high-definition security monitor mounted by the door.

Standing on the porch was Elena Vance, holding a small decorative gift box wrapped in silver ribbon.

Andrés opened the door with a warm, welcoming smile. "Elena. Come in."

"Good evening, Andrés," Elena smiled, stepping into the foyer. "I hope I'm not intruding. I brought some specialized roasted coffee beans from my family's farm in Colima. I remembered Mrs. Teresa mentioning how much she loves dark roasts."

"You're never intruding, Elena," Teresa called out from the dining room, walking over with open arms. "Come, sit with us!"

Over the past two months, Elena had become a frequent and cherished guest at the Robles home. She had worked closely with Andrés's legal team to ensure all assets stolen by her brother were fully liquidated and donated to charities supporting victims of elder financial abuse. Through her courage and integrity, she had earned the deep respect and affection of both Andrés and Teresa.

As Elena sat down with them, sharing stories about her new job as a legal consultant for victims of corporate fraud, Andrés watched her interact with his mother. He noticed the gentle way she listened to Teresa, the genuine warmth in her smile, and the unspoken understanding that had grown between them.

For three years, Andrés had been trapped in a fake marriage built on deceit, greed, and treason. He had believed that love was a vulnerability that could be weaponized against him. But as he looked at Elena, he realized that true partnership wasn't about deception—it was about mutual respect, shared values, and unwavering integrity.

"Andrés?" Elena asked softly, noticing him looking at her. "Is everything okay?"

May you like

Andrés smiled softly, taking a sip of his tea. "Everything is perfect, Elena. Better than it's been in a long time."
