Chapter 5 - The Neighbor's Secret

By mid-afternoon, two unmarked black SUVs were parked discreetly at the corners of the tree-lined street surrounding the Robles estate. Tactical operators in civilian clothing maintained a silent, watchful perimeter. Inside the villa, the atmosphere was suffocating. Renata was confined to the master suite, strictly monitored by Andrés, while he finally brought his mother down from her upstairs prison into the bright, warm living room.

Teresa sat on the plush sofa, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Andrés sat beside her, gently placing a warm cup of herbal tea into her hands. The deep bruises on her wrists were stark against her pale skin, but her eyes were remarkably sharp and focused.

"Drink slowly, Mother," Andrés said softly, his voice full of tenderness that no one else ever witnessed. "You’re safe now."

Teresa took a small sip, letting out a long, trembling sigh. "I knew you would come back for me, Andrés. Every night when she locked that door and turned off the power, I kept telling myself... my son is a soldier. He will see through her."

"I should have seen it sooner," Andrés said, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists. "I was blind."

"No," Teresa said, reaching out to touch his arm. "Renata is a professional actor. But she wasn't working alone, Andrés. You need to know... it wasn't just this 'Esteban' character she was talking to."

Andrés raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Teresa leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The neighbor. Mrs. Lucha."

Andrés stared at his mother in disbelief. "Miss Lucha? The old lady across the street?"

"She is not just a gossipy old neighbor, Andrés," Teresa said, her eyes flashing with anger. "Two weeks ago, late at night, I heard hushed voices outside my window. Renata was standing by the garden gate, passing thick brown envelopes to Mrs. Lucha. And Mrs. Lucha was the one who brought Dr. Valenzuela into this house in the first place!"

Before Andrés could digest this revelation, a soft knock echoed at the front door. Andrés stood up, walked to the hallway window, and peered through the blinds. Standing on the front porch was Mrs. Lucha herself, holding a ceramic casserole dish wrapped in a checkered towel, a sweet, concerned smile plastered across her face.

Andrés opened the door, his tall frame blocking the entryway.

"Oh, Andrés, dear!" Mrs. Lucha chimed, offering a warm, grandmotherly smile. "I saw all the commotion earlier with that medical van leaving so fast. I was so worried about sweet Renata and your poor mother. I baked some vegetable lasagna for you two..."

Andrés looked at the casserole dish, then looked directly into Mrs. Lucha's eyes. "How much did Renata pay you, Miss Lucha?"

Mrs. Lucha's smile instantly froze. "I... I beg your pardon, Andrés? What a strange question!"

"My mother saw you receiving brown envelopes at the garden gate late at night," Andrés said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low tone. "And you were the one who recommended Dr. Valenzuela—a disgraced doctor stripped of his medical license for selling illegal narcotics."

Mrs. Lucha took a step back, her hands trembling so violently that the ceramic dish rattled in her grip. "I... I don't know what you're talking about! I was only trying to help a neighbor in distress!"

"Let's skip the theatrical performance," Andrés said, stepping out onto the porch and closing the front door behind him. "You acted as Renata's accomplice. You helped validate her fake narrative to the neighborhood that my mother was insane, ensuring no one would question her forced isolation. In exchange, Renata paid you off."

Mrs. Lucha’s face transformed from an innocent old woman into a bitter, calculating mask. She scoffed, lowering the casserole dish. "You think you're so smart, don't you, Captain? You military types think you control everything with your guns and your discipline. You don't know half of what's really going on!"

"Then enlighten me," Andrés demanded.

"Renata isn't just trying to steal your mother's bank accounts!" Mrs. Lucha hissed, stepping closer and speaking in a harsh whisper. "Your late father... General Hector... he wasn't just a military officer. He left behind something far more valuable than land titles or pesos. Something buried in the Sierra foundation properties!"

Andrés's eyes narrowed. "What properties?"

" ask your wife about Esteban Vance," Mrs. Lucha smirked maliciously. "He isn't just a financial advisor, Andrés. He's Renata's real husband. They've been married for six years!"

The revelation hit Andrés like a physical blow. His mind raced, connecting the dots with horrifying clarity. Renata was never his wife. His entire marriage of three years was a coordinated, high-stakes long con designed by a pair of career fraudsters to infiltrate his military family and seize his father's vast, undisclosed holdings.

"Where is Esteban right now?" Andrés asked, stepping into Mrs. Lucha's space, his aura so terrifying that the woman dropped the ceramic dish. It shattered onto the stone steps, splattering hot lasagna everywhere.

"He's... he's at the Grand Horizon Hotel in downtown Guadalajara!" Mrs. Lucha squealed in panic, backing down the steps. "Waiting for Renata to bring him the signed conservatorship papers!"

Andrés stared down at the trembling woman. "If you contact him or attempt to leave your house today, my officers will arrest you as a co-conspirator in an active federal treason and grand fraud investigation. Go home, Miss Lucha."

The woman turned and fled across the street as fast as her legs could carry her. Andrés pulled out his phone, dialing Major Vargas once again.

"Vargas," Andrés commanded, his eyes burning with intense resolve. "Prepare a tactical strike team. We're heading to the Grand Horizon Hotel."
