Chapter 4 - The Hidden Safe

The silence inside the house after Dr. Valenzuela's hurried departure was suffocating. Renata stood trembling near the dining table, her flawless facade completely shattered. She watched Andrés as he walked upstairs with purpose, his heavy footfalls echoing like thunder throughout the mansion.

Andrés bypassed his mother’s locked room for a moment and walked directly into his father’s old study at the end of the hallway. The room had been preserved exactly as it was when his father, General Hector Robles, had passed away three years ago—dark oak paneling, leather-bound books, and framed military commendations lining the walls.

Renata hurried up the stairs behind him, her high heels clicking frantically on the hardwood floor. "Andrés, wait! You don't understand the situation! Your mother was losing money! She was making crazy investments, giving cash to scammers! I was only trying to protect the family estate!"

Andrés didn't answer. He walked over to the heavy mahogany bookshelf, reached behind a collection of historical encyclopedia volumes, and pressed a small, hidden release latch. A section of the oak paneling clicked open with a soft metallic pop, revealing a heavy, digital steel wall safe.

Renata's eyes widened in genuine shock. She had lived in this house for three years, searched every drawer and cabinet during Andrés's long deployments, yet she had never known this safe existed.

"What is that?" Renata gasped, her voice shrill.

"My father's private vault," Andrés said, entering a complex eight-digit security code on the keypad. The electronic lock beeped green, and the heavy steel door swung open.

Inside lay stacks of physical land titles, vintage gold coins, encrypted flash drives, and a thick leather ledger bound in brass. But most importantly, resting on top of the documents, was a small black digital audio recorder attached to a wiretap receiver.

Andrés picked up the audio recorder and turned to face Renata. "My father was a military intelligence director. He taught me that the most dangerous enemies are never the ones wearing enemy uniforms across a battlefield. They are the ones who sit at your dinner table."

Renata swallowed hard, backing toward the doorway. "What are you talking about?"

Andrés pressed the play button on the recorder.

A harsh, crackling audio track filled the quiet study. Renata’s own clear, icy voice echoed from the small speaker:

*‘—He’s going to be in the Sierra for at least four months, Esteban. The military command confirmed the deployment schedule yesterday. We have more than enough time to liquidate the real estate holdings in Guadalajara and transfer the titles under Astra Management. Once the old woman signs the conservatorship, we put her in the private home, and Andrés won't be able to do a damn thing.’*

Then a man's deep, smooth voice responded on the recording:

*‘And what if the Captain comes back early? He’s not a fool, Renata.’*

*‘Andrés is an idiot who thinks with his sense of military honor,’* Renata’s recorded voice sneered with cruel laughter. *‘He trusts me completely. He’ll sign whatever I put in front of him because he’s too broken by the war to ask questions. Just get the offshore accounts ready.’*

The recording stopped.

Renata stood frozen, all the color drained from her face. Her lips moved, but no sound came out. The absolute arrogance she had displayed for months had evaporated in a single second.

"Who is Esteban, Renata?" Andrés asked, his voice deathly quiet.

Renata took a shaky breath, her mind racing to construct another lie, but Andrés took a sudden step forward, his shadow engulfing her completely.

"Do not lie to me again!" Andrés roared, his military command voice rattling the glass windows of the study. "Who is Esteban?!"

"He’s... he’s my financial consultant!" Renata cried out, putting her hands up defensively. "He promised he could double the estate's investments! He set up the offshore structure! It was his idea, Andrés! I was manipulated by him!"

"Manipulated?" Andrés chuckled, a dark, terrifying sound. "You laughed on that recording. You called me an idiot. You tortured my mother, locked her in a pitch-black room without food or water, and tried to poison her with Haloperidol today. Is that what you call being manipulated?"

"Andrés, please!" Renata dropped to her knees, clutching his tactical pants, sobbing hysterically. "I love you! I made a terrible mistake! The greed... the pressure... I got carried away! Forgive me! Please, we can fix this! We can throw Esteban to the police and keep the money!"

Andrés looked down at her with pure disgust. He stepped back, pulling his leg out of her grip as if her touch was toxic.

"You don't love me, Renata. You loved my father's legacy and my mother's fortune," Andrés said softly. "And now, you're going to pay for every single second of suffering you inflicted on my mother."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number on speed dial.

"Captain Robles," a voice answered on the line.

"Major Vargas," Andrés spoke into the phone. "Activate the security team. Secure the perimeter of the Zapopan estate immediately. No one leaves this house without my explicit authorization."

"Understood, Captain. Teams are moving in now."

Renata looked up from the floor, her eyes filled with absolute horror as she realized that her comfortable suburban home had just been turned into a high-security military trap.
