Chapter 10 - The Phantom Investor

With the internal restructuring of Mercer-Vance Holdings successfully completed, my attention turned toward stabilizing our commercial real estate portfolio against hostile foreign buyouts. Rumors had been swirling through Wall Street financial circles for days that an anonymous, highly aggressive venture capital syndicate known as 'Aegis Capital' was quietly acquiring distressed company shares on the open market, attempting to force a hostile takeover before our federal audit was fully resolved.

I stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of my office late one evening, reviewing a detailed intelligence report compiled by Victoria Sterling’s cyber-forensic team. The report revealed that Aegis Capital was not an independent foreign syndicate at all, but a shell company front financed by none other than Viktor Thorne—a ruthless, billionaire shipping tycoon with deep ties to international syndicates, and a man my father had aggressively screwed over in a real estate deal five years prior.

My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk, displaying an unknown international caller ID. I picked it up and pressed accept. "This is Chloe Mercer," I said smoothly, watching the city lights blur through the glass. A low, gravelly chuckle echoed through the line, carrying an unmistakable aura of predatory amusement. "Ah, the brilliant forensic accountant who dismantled her own father’s empire in less than an hour. They call you a prodigy, Miss Mercer, but I call you a kindred spirit."

"Save the flattery for someone who cares, Mr. Thorne," I replied, my voice chillingly even. "You’re wasting your time acquiring devalued Mercer stock through Aegis Capital. The federal asset forfeiture department has a first-lien claim on all legacy shares tied to my father’s illegal entities. Whatever hostile takeover you’re planning is legally dead on arrival."

Viktor Thorne laughed again, a darker, sharper sound that sent a shiver down my spine. "You think I want to rescue your father’s rotting carcass, Chloe? No. I want what he stole from me during the 2021 maritime port acquisition—and you happen to be sitting on the exact cryptographic keys that unlock his hidden offshore ledger in the Cayman Islands. Let’s have dinner tomorrow night, Miss Mercer. You might find that my proposal is far more lucrative than running a cleaned-up real estate firm for a bunch of terrified bankers."
