Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

By noon, the emergency board meeting of Mercer Development was underway in a secure conference facility downtown, though Richard Mercer was conspicuously absent, having spent the morning fielding interrogation questions from federal prosecutors. I sat in a sleek glass-walled office on the forty-second floor of an adjacent building, sipping herbal tea while reviewing live corporate filings on my terminal. As a senior forensic accountant who had contracted with multiple firms, I had been quietly retained weeks prior by a consortium of outside institutional investors who suspected massive irregularities and wanted a clean break from the Mercer family dynasty.

The conference room doors swung open on the live security feed, revealing my father flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys. His face was ashen, the rich tan of a man who spent weekends on yacht decks replaced by the sickly pallor of an impending indictment. He looked older, his shoulders slumped beneath the expensive velvet jacket that now felt less like armor and more like a shroud. Flashbulbs from paparazzi staked out in the lobby caught his every stumble as reporters shouted aggressive questions about the twelve million dollars missing from the corporate escrow accounts.

Inside the boardroom, the institutional shareholders didn't waste any time offering sympathy. Arthur Vance, the managing director of Vanguard Capital and primary debt holder, stood up at the head of the mahogany table. "Mr. Mercer, under the terms of our emergency covenant clause, effective immediately, you are stripped of your title as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board," Vance announced, his voice devoid of emotion. "Furthermore, the board has unanimously voted to appoint an independent restructuring officer to audit all remaining assets."

Richard slammed his palms onto the polished wood, his face contorting into a mask of pure fury. "You can't do this! I built this company from the ground up! This is a coup staged by a disgruntled, bitter employee!" he roared, spattering saliva across the table. Vance didn't even flinch. He simply slid a single document across the mahogany surface—a court-ordered injunction freezing all of Richard’s personal holdings, signed by a federal judge less than an hour earlier.

"You built this company on quicksand, Richard, and your own daughter provided the shovel," Vance said quietly, leaning forward with a chilling smile. "You shouldn't have slapped her at the Halston Grand. Word has it the photo of your hand hitting her face is currently trending number one on social media, destroying what little public goodwill your brand had left. Pack your things. Your security clearance is revoked."
