Chapter 11 - The Predator’s Table

The private dining room at Le Cygne—a Michelin-starred restaurant tucked away behind an unmarked wrought-iron gate in the financial district—was bathed in amber candlelight. I sat across from Viktor Thorne, studying the man who controlled half the shipping lanes in the North Atlantic. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his silvering hair combed back sharply, and his dark eyes gleamed with an unsettling mix of calculation and predatory charm. He had rented out the entire restaurant for our meeting, ensuring absolute privacy.

"You have exquisite taste in adversaries, Chloe," Viktor remarked, swirling a glass of 1982 Bordeaux before taking a slow sip. "Your father always thought he was the smartest predator in any room he entered, completely blind to the fact that he was merely a clumsy shark swimming in an ocean he didn't own. When I heard about the slap at the Halston Grand, I knew right then that Richard Mercer had signed his own death warrant by underestimating his own blood."

"Let’s skip the philosophical analysis of my father’s incompetence, Mr. Thorne," I said, setting my napkin beside my untouched plate of artisanal appetizers. "You didn't bring me to an exclusive private dining room just to discuss family dynamics. You mentioned a Cayman Islands ledger during our phone call. Get to the point."

Viktor smiled, setting his wineglass down with a soft click against the white linen tablecloth. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Direct. I like that. Five years ago, your father embezzled forty million dollars in development capital intended for a joint port terminal project we shared, hiding the funds in a clandestine Cayman trust under a cryptographic umbrella. The federal investigators currently auditing Mercer-Vance have frozen standard corporate accounts, but they haven't touched that specific offshore trust because they don't have the decryption keys. You found them during your eight-month audit, Chloe. I want the keys, and in exchange, I will guarantee that Aegis Capital injects two hundred million dollars of liquid capital into your firm, making you untouchable by any institutional board revolt."

I looked into Viktor’s dark, calculating eyes, recognizing the contours of a classic high-stakes gamble. "And what guarantees do I have, Mr. Thorne, that once I hand over the keys, you won't crush Mercer-Vance just for the sport of it?" Viktor’s smile widened, filled with dangerous fascination. "Guarantees? None, Chloe. Just my word—and the knowledge that a woman as brilliant as you would never walk into a trap without having a contingency plan locked away in her own digital vault."
