Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The sun dipped below the jagged city skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across my apartment. I stood by the window, watching the distant lights of the financial district flicker to life against the gathering winter dusk. My phone, which I had finally switched back to normal mode, sat on the kitchen island, vibrating intermittently with text messages from unknown numbers, journalists offering lucrative exclusive interviews, and lawyers representing various creditors begging for a meeting.
A soft knock sounded at my door—not the frantic, desperate pounding Grant had inflicted earlier, but a single, measured tap. I frowned, walking cautiously toward the entryway and peering through the peephole. Standing in the dim hallway was a woman I recognized instantly: Victoria Sterling, the formidable managing partner of Sterling & Cole, the most ruthless corporate litigation firm in the state. She wore a sharp charcoal trench coat, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a flawless chignon, holding a leather briefcase like a tactical weapon.
I unlocked the door and pulled it open. "Ms. Sterling. To what do I owe the honor?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe without inviting her in immediately. Victoria offered a tight, knowing smile that didn't quite reach her sharp eyes. "May I come in, Chloe? Or are we going to conduct multi-million-dollar negotiations in a drafty hallway?" she asked smoothly, stepping past me before I could formulate a polite refusal.

She surveyed my modest living room with clinical detachment before turning to face me. "Your father is facing forty years in federal prison for wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate identity theft. The board wants to salvage whatever goodwill remains, and institutional investors are terrified of a protracted public trial that will drag down the entire stock index," Victoria explained, setting her briefcase on the kitchen island and clicking open the brass latches.
"And where do you fit into this, Ms. Sterling?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. She pulled out a thick stack of embossed legal documents and slid them across the counter toward me. "The board and our institutional partners realize that Mercer Development cannot survive without the person who actually understands its plumbing—you. They want to restructure the firm under a new corporate identity, appoint a fresh executive board, and name you as the new Chief Executive Officer. And as for your father and brother? They are officially persona non grata. Are you ready to take the crown, Chloe?"
