Chapter 8 - The Fallen King

While I consolidated my power in the executive suite downtown, my father was experiencing the bitter, crushing reality of total ruin in a sterile holding cell at the federal courthouse. Denied bail due to being an extreme flight risk given his extensive offshore assets, Richard Mercer sat across a stainless-steel table from his lead defense attorney, a high-priced litigator whose confidence had evaporated the moment I handed over the cryptographic server logs.
"What do you mean, bail denied? I am Richard Mercer! I own half the commercial real estate in this city!" Richard bellowed, slamming his cuffed hands onto the steel table, rattling the plastic chairs in the small consultation room. The attorney, a tired man named Henderson who looked like he wanted nothing more than to drop the case, sighed heavily and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
"Mr. Mercer, please keep your voice down. The prosecutor didn't just present standard circumstantial evidence; they submitted a fully authenticated, timestamped forensic accounting package complete with your digital signature logs, IP addresses, and encrypted wire transfer receipts directly linking your personal offshore entities to the twelve-million-dollar embezzlement," Henderson explained, his tone flat and devoid of professional warmth. "The judge considers you a flight risk of the highest order. Furthermore, your son Grant has been picked up for questioning regarding fraudulent business loans tied to your primary accounts."

The color drained entirely from Richard’s face, leaving him looking frail and shrunken inside his ill-fitting designer jacket. "My daughter... Chloe did this. She set me up! She’s my own flesh and blood!" Richard choked out, a pathetic mixture of rage and terror breaking through his arrogant exterior. Henderson gave him a cold, pitying look. "Your daughter didn't forge your signature, Mr. Mercer. She simply stopped covering your tracks. Word in the legal community is that she was just appointed CEO of the newly restructured Mercer-Vance Holdings. You didn't just lose your empire; she inherited it."
Richard slumped back in his chair, staring blindly at the concrete wall as the full weight of his catastrophic miscalculation crashed down upon him. The birthday party at the Halston Grand felt like a lifetime ago—the laughter, the champagne, the arrogant slap across my cheek. Every single act of cruelty had served as the final brick in the prison cell he had meticulously built for himself, with his own daughter holding the master key.
