Chapter 12 - The Shadow of the Past

Returning to my penthouse apartment long past midnight, the city outside was buried under a fresh blanket of pristine, silent snow. I unlocked the heavy oak door and stepped into the dark entryway, tossing my leather briefcase onto the console table. Before I could reach for the wall switch, a floorboard creaked softly near the living room window. My body went rigid. I wasn't alone.
Before I could turn toward the sound, a heavy hand clamped firmly over my mouth while another arm wrapped around my waist, pinning me against a solid, muscular chest. A low, raspy whisper brushed against my ear in the darkness. "Don't scream, little forensic bird, or someone might get hurt before we finish our conversation." My heart hammered furiously against my ribs, adrenaline surging through my veins as I instinctively reached for the heavy brass paperweight sitting on the console table.
With a sudden, violent twist of my elbow, I slammed my forearm backward into my attacker’s ribs, catching him off guard. He grunted in pain, his grip loosening just enough for me to wrench myself free. I spun around, flicking on the hallway wall switch with my palm. Bathed in the sudden, blinding glare of the overhead chandelier, I found myself staring down a man holding his side—Grant, my older brother.
He looked pathetic. His expensive designer clothes were stained with mud, his face was unshaven and bruised on one cheek, and his eyes had the frantic, paranoid wildness of a desperate animal cornered in a trap. "Grant? Have you lost your absolute mind breaking into my apartment?" I demanded, my voice trembling slightly with anger as I gripped the brass paperweight like a weapon.

"They’re going to put me away for twenty years, Chloe! Father’s lawyers cut a deal with the federal prosecutors, and they’re pinning every single fraudulent corporate loan entirely on me!" Grant sobbed, stumbling forward with his hands outstretched in a pathetic gesture of pleading. "You’re the CEO now! You have the power to fix this! Tell the federal investigators it was an accounting error, tell them I was just following orders! Please, Chloe... I'm your brother!"
I lowered the paperweight very slowly, looking at the broken shell of the golden boy who had mocked me for years while bleeding our family name dry. "You’re right, Grant. You are my brother," I said quietly, the coldness in my voice cutting deeper than any physical blow. "And the night of Father’s birthday party, when you lifted your champagne glass and called me the family disappointment while he slapped my face, you sealed this exact outcome. Get out of my apartment before I call federal marshals to finish what they started."
