Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Rose

The rain in the city was not a cleansing force; it was a greasy film that settled over the streets, reflecting the neon signs like oil slicks. Julian stood on the rooftop of a high-rise, the wind whipping his coat against his legs. Below, the sprawling city was a maze of light and shadow, but his eyes were fixed on the imposing, fortress-like structure of the Vance estate.

“You’re late,” a voice crackled in his earpiece. It was Silas, his handler, a man whose voice sounded like gravel being ground under a heel.

“I’m exactly where I need to be,” Julian replied, his voice devoid of emotion. He checked his watch. The gala would be starting in twenty minutes.

Inside the Vance mansion, the world was a gilded cage. Julian remembered the cold, sharp lines of the St. Jude orphanage, but this was a different kind of cold. This was the cold of refined cruelty. He adjusted his earpiece and checked the signal jammer in his pocket. He was ready to breach the perimeter, but before he moved, he reached into his vest pocket, his thumb brushing over the cool, silver surface of the locket. The rose engraving was worn smooth by years of desperate handling.

He didn’t know if Elena would even recognize him. It had been ten years since that Tuesday. Ten years of learning how to hide in plain sight, how to manipulate code, and how to become a phantom. The last time he had seen her, she was a frightened child, her hand pressed against the glass of the black sedan. Now, she was the key to a conspiracy so deep that it threatened to collapse the city’s entire power structure.

“The security cameras are looping,” Silas informed him. “You have three minutes before the patrol rounds the east corridor.”

Julian didn’t waste a breath. He rappelled down the side of the building, a shadow against the night. His movements were precise, born of thousands of hours of practice. When he hit the ground, he was a wraith, slipping through the shadows toward the service entrance.

“Julian,” Elena’s voice seemed to whisper in his mind.

He had to get her out. He had to honor the promise he made in the muddy play yard of St. Jude. He would tear this house down if he had to.
