Chapter 5 - The Descent into Chaos

The roof was a flat, windswept expanse overlooking the city. Below them, the streets were a blur of activity—police sirens, flashing lights, the frantic rhythm of urban life. The extraction helicopter was still minutes away.

“They’re coming!” Elena screamed, pointing to the door leading to the roof.

It burst open, and three armed guards flooded out. Julian took a position behind an HVAC unit, drawing his own weapon. He had trained for this, but the weight of protecting Elena made every decision feel heavy, every movement a risk.

“Stay down,” he ordered.

He fired, his shots precise, keeping the guards pinned back. But he was outnumbered. He was a lone man against a corporate army.

“Silas! Where is the extraction?” Julian shouted into the earpiece.

“Three minutes!”

Julian looked at Elena. She was shivering, the cold air biting into her skin. He realized then that it wasn’t just the cold; she was experiencing withdrawal. Her body was reacting to the sudden disconnection from the network.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, curled into a ball. “I can hear them, Julian. They’re still in my head.”

Julian stepped out from cover, firing wildly to draw their attention. He took a bullet to the shoulder, the pain searing and hot. He gasped, falling to his knees.

“Julian!”

Alistair Vance appeared on the roof, his face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. “You think you can take her from me? You are nothing! You are a mistake in my system!”

He raised his gun, aiming directly at Julian’s head.
