Chapter 9 - The Final Protocol

The world began to change. Finance markets crashed, governments destabilized, and private data became public knowledge overnight. It wasn't an attack; it was a transition. Elena was no longer just Elena; she was the central node of a new, global consciousness.
Julian knew what he had to do. There was only one way to break the link.
“You have to shut it down,” he told her.
They were sitting by the fire, the last remnants of the winter snow melting outside. Elena was calm now, her eyes clear.
“If I shut it down,” she said softly, “I go with it. The neural pathways are fused, Julian. I am the bridge.”
Julian felt his heart shatter for the second time. “I can’t lose you again.”
“You never really had me,” she said, reaching out to touch his cheek. “I died in that car, years ago. This is just the echo.”

“I’ll do it,” he said, his voice firm.
