Chapter 4 - The Shattered Promise

The world seemed to slow to a standstill. Elena’s eyes, once vibrant and full of life, were clouded with years of digital trauma. She looked at Julian, but she didn’t see him—not really. She saw a flicker of the boy from the orphanage, a ghost from a life that had been systematically erased.

“You… you came back,” she said, her voice barely audible.

Alistair Vance didn’t wait for them to reconnect. He fired.

Julian tackled Elena, pulling her behind a massive server rack just as the bullet shattered the screen they had been standing in front of. Shards of glass rained down, sparkling like diamonds in the dim light.

“Get her to the roof,” Silas shouted through the earpiece. “The extraction team is ten minutes out.”

“Ten minutes is an eternity!” Julian yelled back, grabbing Elena’s hand.

She looked confused, her movements sluggish. “The woods, Julian? Are we in the woods?”

“Yes,” he lied, his voice tight. “We’re in the woods. But we have to move.”

He pulled her up and they sprinted toward the service exit. Behind them, Alistair Vance was shouting orders to his security team. They were hunted, trapped in a house designed to keep people in.

Julian navigated the corridors with the help of his handheld device, finding the shortest route to the roof. He kept his hand gripped tightly around hers, terrified that if he let go, she would vanish into the digital void once more.

“Why?” she asked, breathless as they ran.

“Because I promised,” he said.

They reached the staircase. It was their only hope. As they ascended, Julian could hear the heavy boots of the guards behind them, a rhythmic, terrifying sound. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the locket, thrusting it into Elena’s hand.

“Keep this,” he said. “Don’t let go of it.”

She clutched it, her eyes focusing for the first time. “The rose.”
