Chapter 2 - The Facade of Gold

The interior of the Vance estate was opulent to the point of nausea. Massive chandeliers dripped crystals like frozen tears, and the air smelled of expensive perfume and hidden agendas. Julian, dressed in the guise of a caterer, moved through the kitchen, his heart hammering against his ribs in a controlled rhythm.
Alistair Vance stood in the center of the ballroom, holding court like a king in a dying kingdom. He was a man who commanded the room not through charm, but through the sheer weight of his arrogance. Julian watched him, noting the way his eyes darted to the heavy, reinforced door at the end of the hall. That was where she was.
“Sir, the champagne,” a server muttered, bumping into Julian.
“My apologies,” Julian murmured, his eyes never leaving the doorway.
He knew Alistair didn’t have a daughter. He had a prisoner. The rumors, the ones Julian had spent years piecing together from deep-web forums and corporate leaks, were true. Elena was not just a ward; she was the central processing unit for an illegal, high-frequency trading algorithm. They had wired her into the system, her neural pathways acting as the bridge for Vance’s illicit gains.
He slipped away from the catering crew and ducked into the service hallway. The silence here was thick, pressing. He moved toward the security console he had spent months studying.
“I’m at the node,” Julian whispered.
“Accessing now,” Silas replied.
The screens flickered, revealing the inner workings of the mansion’s security. Julian began the bypass, his fingers flying across the virtual interface. He saw the feed of the room where Elena was kept. She was sitting in a chair, her eyes closed, her temple hooked up to a mass of glowing fiber-optic cables. She looked ethereal, trapped in a digital limbo.
“I’m coming, Elena,” he breathed.
Just then, a heavy hand landed on his shoulder. Julian spun around, his hand flying to the concealed blade at his waist. It was a guard, his face a mask of brutal efficiency.

“You shouldn’t be here, catering staff,” the guard rumbled.
Julian didn’t hesitate. He swung his elbow into the guard’s throat, followed by a swift strike to the temple. The man crumpled. Julian stood over him, his breath steady. This was just the beginning.
