Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Wire

They hid in a remote cabin in the mountains, a place far from the reach of the digital world. The air was crisp, scented with pine needles—just like in her memories. But the silence of the woods was not the peace Julian had promised.
Elena would spend hours staring at the trees, her lips moving in a silent, rapid-fire sequence. She was translating the wind, the rustle of leaves, the movement of animals into binary. She was still plugged in.
Julian watched her from the porch, his hand resting on his injured shoulder. He had tried to help her, to reach her, but she was drifting further and further away.
“Elena, talk to me,” he pleaded one evening.
She turned to him, her expression blank. “The system is self-healing, Julian. Alistair is dead, but the architecture remains. It needs a host. It’s choosing me.”
“You’re free,” he said, his voice desperate.
