Chapter 2 - The Rehearsal Dinner Disaster

The news of the hospital confrontation spread through the upper echelons of the city’s elite faster than wildfire. By midnight, the gossip columns and private group chats were buzzing with rumors about Ethan Cole’s impending wedding and the sudden appearance of an heir he never knew existed.

Bianca sat in the vanity room of the grand ballroom where the rehearsal dinner was supposed to be wrapping up, throwing crystal champagne flutes against the mirrored wall. The sound of shattering glass echoed through the suite as her makeup artist cowered near the door.

“How could this happen?” Bianca screamed, tears smearing her expensive mascara. “That miserable cow ruined everything! Tomorrow is supposed to be my day! The society pages, the guest list, the senators, the investors—they’re all going to find out!”

Ethan paced the length of the suite, a whiskey glass clutched so tightly in his hand that his knuckles were white. His mind was racing through a dozen catastrophic scenarios. If Claire had the financial records, if the police pursued Bianca for assault, if the paternity scandal leaked to the board of directors—his entire empire, built on a foundation of aggressive ambition and stolen credit, could collapse overnight.

“Stop crying and listen to me,” Ethan snapped, stopping in front of her. “We push through. The wedding happens tomorrow at noon, exactly as planned. If we project total confidence, no one will dare question us.”

“Confidence?” Bianca shrieked, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at him. “Your ex-wife is sitting in a hospital bed with your newborn son, and her lawyer is armed with a federal subpoena! They arrested security footage of me, Ethan! I could go to prison!”

“They won’t do anything if we control the narrative,” Ethan lied, though a knot of cold dread was tightening in his own stomach. He pulled out his phone, dialing his lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance.

It took four rings before Marcus picked up, his voice sounding unusually exhausted and grim.

“Ethan. I heard about St. Matthew’s Hospital,” Marcus said without preamble.

“I don’t care what you heard,” Ethan barked. “I want an injunction filed against Claire immediately. Gag order. Restraining order. I want her cut off from any legal leverage regarding the company or my assets.”

There was a long, heavy pause on the other end of the line. When Marcus spoke again, his voice carried a tone of professional surrender that terrified Ethan more than anger ever could.

“Ethan, I can’t file an injunction.”

“What do you mean you can’t? I’m paying you a retainer that could buy a yacht!”

“I mean,” Marcus said quietly, “that three hours ago, an auditor from the federal prosecutor's office seized our primary server logs. Furthermore, I just received a comprehensive asset-freezing order signed by Judge Harrison. Every corporate account linked to your holding company has been locked pending a forensic audit.”

Ethan stumbled backward, his hip hitting the edge of the mahogany desk. The whiskey glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the plush carpet, the amber liquid pooling like blood.

“Locked? Who authorized an audit? On what grounds?”

“On the grounds of corporate fraud, tax evasion, and forgery,” Marcus replied flatly. “And the primary affiant on the affidavit... is Claire Cole.”

“Claire is Bennett! She dropped Cole months ago!” Ethan roared.

“Not according to the original prenuptial and holding trust documents filed ten years ago,” Marcus corrected him coldly. “Documents that were executed under her maiden name, granting her sole controlling interest in the parent company, with you listed merely as an operational manager. Ethan... you don’t own the company. You never did.”

The phone slipped from Ethan’s limp fingers, clattering onto the floor. Bianca stared at him, her face completely drained of color. The rehearsal dinner wasn’t just interrupted—it was the funeral of their entire future.
