Chapter 9 - The Queen’s Gambit

The announcement of Bennett Global’s hostile counter-audit against Sterling Global Assets hit Wall Street like a tactical nuclear strike. By 9:00 AM, financial news anchors were scrambling to parse the labyrinthine corporate connections linking Victoria Sterling to the fallen Cole enterprise.

Inside her penthouse office on Park Avenue, Victoria Sterling stood before her floor-to-ceiling windows, staring furiously at the live broadcast on Bloomberg TV. Her tailored St. John pantsuit was immaculate, but her hands trembled slightly as she crushed a crystal pen between her fingers.

“That arrogant little bitch,” Victoria hissed, turning to face her chief legal counsel, a slick, expensive corporate shark named Arthur Pendelton. “How did she find the Swiss routing numbers? Those accounts were buried behind three layers of Cayman holding trusts!”

Arthur pushed his designer glasses up his nose, looking profoundly uneasy. “We underestimated her, Victoria. Our intelligence suggested Claire Bennett was purely a back-office forensic analyst with zero appetite for aggressive corporate warfare. We didn’t anticipate she’d turn our own shadow transactions into federal evidence.”

“I don’t care about what our intelligence suggested!” Victoria snapped, slamming her fist onto the marble desk. “If that audit proceeds, SEC investigators will uncover our entire leveraged short position against Bennett Global. We’ll face federal racketeering charges!”

“Then we neutralize the threat before the audit hits the floor,” Arthur said smoothly, his eyes narrowing. “Claire Bennett is formidable, but she has one glaring vulnerability.”

Victoria turned her head, a cold, predatory light entering her eyes. “The baby.”

“Exactly,” Arthur replied. “An infant child requires specialized care, twenty-four-hour monitoring, and constant medical oversight. People with newborns make emotional mistakes when their families are threatened.”

“Arrange a meeting with the private security firm guarding her penthouse,” Victoria commanded, a wicked smile spreading across her painted lips. “Let’s remind Ms. Bennett that high-stakes corporate warfare isn’t won with spreadsheets—it’s won with leverage.”

Unbeknownst to Victoria, however, her entire conversation was being recorded in crystal-clear high-definition audio.

Back at Bennett Global headquarters, Marcus Vance calmly disconnected the secure decryption drive plugged into our central terminal. He looked up at me with a mixture of awe and absolute terror.

“You planted a backdoor packet sniffer inside Sterling Global’s primary router during our initial audit handshake yesterday,” Marcus said, shaking his head in disbelief. “Claire... you baited her into plotting against us on an insecure line.”

I smiled calmly, gently rocking Noah’s bassinet with one hand while reviewing the audio transcript scrolling across my monitor. “Victoria is a creature of old-school corporate arrogance. She thinks power is about intimidation and backroom deals. She forgot that in the digital age, the person holding the server keys always wins.”

“She’s going to target Noah,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a grave whisper. “Should we notify federal protection?”

“No,” I replied, my eyes hardening into shards of ice. “Let her make her move. Let her step right into the trap. Because by tomorrow afternoon, Victoria Sterling won’t just be facing an SEC audit—she’ll be facing a federal felony indictment for domestic terrorism and extortion.”
