Chapter 6 - Ashes of the Past

The fallout from the cathedral arrests was instantaneous and catastrophic for the Cole name. By Monday morning, financial news networks had replaced their regular market reports with rolling coverage of the raid on Cole Enterprises. Headlines screamed across every major newspaper: *From High Society to Federal Custody: The Collapse of the Cole Empire.*
Inside my newly reclaimed executive office on the 50th floor of the skyscraper, the panoramic view of Manhattan was breathtaking. The heavy mahogany desk that Ethan had arrogantly claimed as his own was now cleared of his belongings. My laptop sat in the center, alongside a soft bassinet where Noah slept soundly, completely oblivious to the multi-million-dollar corporate restructuring happening around him.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Marcus Vance—now operating as my personal corporate counsel after turning state’s evidence against Ethan—stepped inside carrying a thick stack of audited balance sheets.
“Good morning, Claire,” Marcus said cautiously, his posture stiff with professional deference. “The board of directors has convened downstairs. They’ve formally voted to reinstate your original founding shares and restore your position as Chief Executive Officer.”
I didn’t look up from the financial spreadsheet on my screen. “And what about Ethan’s emergency petitions to block the asset freeze?”
“Dismissed with prejudice by Judge Harrison ten minutes ago,” Marcus replied, laying the papers on the desk. “His defense team tried to claim entrapment, but the judge cited clear documentation proving that Ethan initiated the fraudulent asset transfers himself. Furthermore, Bianca’s family has officially cut her loose. Her father released a public statement disowning her and refusing to pay her legal fees.”
“Poetic justice,” I murmured, finally raising my eyes to look at him. “What is the current valuation of the subsidiary assets Ethan tried to siphon?”
“Roughly forty-five million dollars, currently sitting in frozen federal escrow accounts,” Marcus said, adjusting his glasses. “Our forensic team has verified that every cent can be legally recovered and repatriated back into the parent holding company within the week.”
“Do it,” I instructed calmly. “And prepare a public press release announcing the complete restructuring of the company under its original founding charter—Bennett Global Technologies.”
Marcus nodded, hesitating for a moment before speaking again. “There is one more thing, Claire. Ethan’s defense attorney submitted a formal request for a prison visitation meeting. He claims he needs your signature on a secondary liquidity document to avoid complete bankruptcy liquidation of his personal estate.”
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Tell Ethan that the only signature he’ll ever get from me is the one on his divorce decree. He wanted everything, and now he’ll get exactly what he earned—nothing.”
As Marcus exited the office, closing the heavy door quietly behind him, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window. Down on the street below, tiny yellow cabs zipped through the canyons of concrete and steel. Just a few months ago, I had been cast out of this very building, abandoned, pregnant, and betrayed by the man I had dedicated my youth to supporting.

Now, I stood at the very top. But as I looked down at my sleeping son in the bassinet, I knew that revenge was only the prologue. The real challenge—building an unbreakable empire on the ashes of betrayal—was just beginning.
