Chapter 5 - The Downfall of an Empire

The cathedral descended into absolute chaos. Shouts of indignation, frantic whispers, and the rapid-fire clicking of camera shutters filled the sacred space as the reality of the situation set in. Ethan remained on his knees at the foot of the altar, his custom tuxedo wrinkled, his carefully constructed persona evaporating into thin air.
Bianca was sobbing hysterically, her white silk dress dragging across the dusty marble as the marshals formally read her Miranda rights. The guests in the pews began scrambling toward the exits, eager to distance themselves from a sinking ship that was making national headlines in real time.
I walked past Ethan, my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor, and stood before the altar where the velvet-lined cushions rested. I turned back to look down at him, my expression devoid of pity.
“You thought you could leave me with nothing, Ethan,” I said softly, just loud enough for him to hear over the din of the commotion. “You thought signing those fake transfer papers while I was bedridden would give you everything I spent a decade building.”
Ethan looked up, his eyes bloodshot, filled with a mixture of terror and burning hatred. “You... you planned all of this,” he whispered hoarsely. “You knew about the offshore accounts the entire time.”
“I didn’t just know about them, Ethan,” I replied, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. “I coded the encryption keys. Every dollar you thought you stole was routed through a tracking ledger that automatically reported directly to the federal financial crimes unit the second you triggered your divorce settlement.”
He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The realization hit him with the force of a freight train: he hadn't outsmarted his wife; he had willingly walked into a meticulously crafted bear trap that she had left wide open for him.
A team of auditors and investigators marched down the center aisle, led by Detective Miller from the financial precinct. Miller stopped in front of Ethan and pulled out a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs.
“Ethan Cole, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy,” Miller recited calmly, grabbing Ethan’s arm and hauling him to his feet.
“Wait! Let me speak to my lawyer! This is a mistake!” Ethan protested, flailing weakly as the cuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
“Your lawyers are already cooperating with us, Mr. Cole,” Miller said flatly. “Move along.”
As Ethan was dragged down the same aisle where he had expected to celebrate his glorious triumph, his eyes met mine one last time. There was no smugness left—only the hollow, desperate gaze of a man who had lost everything because of his own unbridled greed.
I turned away, walking back down the aisle toward the stroller where Noah was stirring softly, letting out a tiny yawn. My attorney handed me my leather portfolio as we walked out into the crisp autumn sunlight.
“What’s our next move, Ms. Bennett?” he asked respectfully.
May you like
“We take back the headquarters,” I said, looking toward the towering glass skyscraper bearing my family name that Ethan had tried to steal. “And then we rebuild.”
