Chapter 4 - Marching Down the Aisle

The sheer audacity of my entrance paralyzed the entire room. For a few agonizing seconds, the string quartet continued to play a cheerful Vivaldi melody, completely oblivious to the explosive tension choking the air, until the lead violinist noticed the paralyzed crowd and abruptly stopped bowing, letting the final note die out in absolute silence.
I walked down the grand marble aisle with measured, deliberate steps. Every eye in the cathedral was glued to me—some filled with shock, others with scandalous delight, and a few, like Ethan’s wealthy business associates in the front rows, with sudden, palpable panic as they recognized my face.
“Claire...” Ethan choked out, his voice cracking as he stumbled down the altar steps toward me, his hands trembling at his sides. “What the hell are you doing here? Security! Someone get her out of here right now!”
Not a single security guard moved. They couldn’t. Standing near the back doors were two federal marshals in dark suits, their presence making it abundantly clear whose authority currently governed the building.
I stopped three feet from Ethan, tilting my head slightly with a cold, mocking smile. “What’s the matter, Ethan? You invited the public to watch you win. I figured a mother and your legitimate heir should have front-row seats to the main event.”
From behind the altar doors, Bianca burst out, her veil flying behind her, her face distorted with rage. “Get that trash out of my church!” she shrieked, rushing down the steps. “This is our wedding! You planned this to ruin us!”
“Ru ruin you?” I turned my gaze slowly toward her, letting the iciness in my voice cut through the cavernous space. “Bianca, you didn’t need my help to ruin yourselves. You did that all on your own the moment you shoved a pregnant woman in a parking garage and committed corporate conspiracy with a man who couldn’t even manage his own checkbook.”
A massive murmur rippled through the congregation. High-society matrons gasped, clutching their pearls, while journalists in the back rows frantically began typing on their phones, broadcasting the scandal live to millions across social media.
“Shut up! Shut your lying mouth!” Bianca lunged forward, her manicured nails clawing toward my face, driven by sheer hysterical panic.
Before she could take two steps, the two federal marshals stepped forward with lightning speed, blocking her path and pinning her arms gently but firmly behind her back. Bianca let out a piercing shriek of humiliation as the entire elite of New York watched their golden-girl bride restrained like a common criminal.
“Release her!” Ethan roared, trying to push past the marshals. “This is a private civil matter! You have no jurisdiction here!”
“Actually, Mr. Cole, we do,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the back. Marcus Vance’s former co-counsel, now acting as my lead litigator, stepped forward holding a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents. He walked right up to the altar, stopping beside Ethan.
“Federal arrest warrants have been issued for both Bianca Vance and Ethan Cole,” the attorney announced loudly enough for every microphone to catch. “Charges include grand larceny, wire fraud, corporate forgery, and assault resulting in grievous bodily harm.”

The color drained completely from Ethan’s face. He dropped to his knees right there on the marble floor of the altar, his hands clutching his head as the illusion of his grand victory shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
