Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Nest

Back at Bennett Global Technologies, the atmosphere was charged with high-stakes corporate momentum. The transition from Cole Enterprises to our original legacy name had injected massive confidence into our institutional investors, sending stock prices surging by thirty-four percent in a single week.
I sat at the head of the mahogany boardroom table, listening to our chief financial strategist brief the executive committee on our Q3 acquisitions. The room was sleek, modern, and filled with brilliant minds who actually respected leadership rather than toxic ambition.
“Our hostile takeover of the liquidated Cole subsidiary assets is ninety percent complete, Ms. Bennett,” the strategist reported, projecting a glowing financial chart onto the smart-board. “However, we’ve encountered an unexpected anomaly regarding the offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands.”
I narrowed my eyes, leaning forward. “What kind of anomaly?”
“It appears Ethan wasn’t the only one drawing capital from those shell companies,” the strategist replied, tapping a key to bring up a secondary data stream. “Three days before his arrest, a series of automated wire transfers totaling twelve million dollars were redirected to an unlisted, encrypted Swiss beneficiary account.”
Marcus Vance frowned, leaning over the table. “That’s impossible. I managed the corporate trust ledgers. No secondary account could authorize a twelve-million-dollar extraction without executive override keys.”
“Unless,” I said coldly, the pieces of the puzzle clicking together in my mind with terrifying clarity, “someone with master-level admin access authorized it from the inside.”
“Who?” Marcus asked, his face pale.
“Victoria Sterling,” I said, the name dropping like a lead weight in the room. Victoria was Bianca’s ruthless, calculating aunt and the primary managing director of Sterling Global Assets—one of our major institutional venture capital partners.
Marcus gasped. “Victoria? But she’s on our board! She helped us secure the initial bridge loans during the restructuring!”
“She didn’t help us out of charity, Marcus,” I said, standing up and walking toward the glass wall overlooking the city. “She used Ethan’s stupidity as a smokescreen to execute a predatory leveraged buyout. While Ethan and Bianca were playing high-society chess, Victoria was quietly positioning herself to swallow both of our companies whole.”
The board room fell dead silent. The realization hung heavily in the air: the war wasn’t over. Ethan was just a disposable pawn, and the real grandmaster had just stepped onto the board.
“What are our counter-options?” Marcus asked, his voice tight with professional anxiety.
“Options?” I turned around, a fierce, razor-sharp smile touching my lips. “Victoria thinks she’s dealing with a heartbroken ex-wife who just won a domestic dispute. She has no idea she just invited an apex predator into her own vault.”

I tapped my wristwatch. “Call an emergency press conference for tomorrow morning. Announce that Bennett Global is launching an immediate, hostile counter-audit of Sterling Global Assets. Let’s see how long Victoria’s Swiss accounts stay hidden when the federal securities commission starts auditing her personal ledger.”
