Chapter 12 - The Gala at Ada

The coastal town of Ada Foah, located where the massive Volta River spills into the vast, churning waters of the Atlantic Ocean, was a paradise of white sand beaches, whispering palm trees, and ultra-luxury private resorts.

The Royal Atlantic Resort was glowing brilliantly under a star-filled night sky. Thousands of twinkling fairy lights hung from palm trees, illuminating grand white marquees, crystal bars, and an opulent outdoor ballroom set right near the ocean waves. The air was filled with the sweet sounds of a live jazz orchestra and the soothing rhythm of crashing ocean surf.

West Africa's most prominent figures—diplomats, billionaires, government ministers, and international celebrities—milled about in elegant black-tie attire, sipping vintage champagne and enjoying luxury hors d’oeuvres.

Amina stepped onto the grand terrace, looking breathtakingly gorgeous in a floor-length emerald green silk gown that accentuated her graceful posture, with the diamond necklace sparkling brilliantly against her collarbone. Beside her stood Kofi, looking extraordinarily handsome in a tailored black tuxedo and shiny leather shoes.

The moment Samuel escorted Amina and Kofi into the main pavilion, a wave of applause echoed through the distinguished crowd. Flashbulbs erupted as high-society photographers rushed forward to capture images of the woman who had captivated the nation's heart.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Samuel announced proudly into a golden microphone at the center stage. "Tonight, it is my greatest honor to officially introduce my grandson, Kofi Mensah, and his extraordinary mother, Amina! They represent the future, the heart, and the true legacy of the Mensah family!"

The crowd cheered loudly, raising their champagne glasses in a magnificent toast. Kofi beamed with pride, holding his head high as several prominent dignitaries stepped forward to shake his small hand.

Standing near the dark edge of the beach, far away from the glowing lights of the main marquee, Victoria Mensah stood sipping a glass of red wine. She was dressed in a sleek black dress, her eyes cold and fixated entirely on young Kofi.

Beside her stood Frank Malone, who had managed to slip into the resort disguised as an event catering manager, wearing a white uniform and carrying a silver serving tray.

"Is everything in place, Malone?" Victoria asked in a low, dangerous whisper, keeping her eyes on the crowd.

"The jet ski is prepped near the dark mangroves half a mile down the river bank," Malone replied in a raspy whisper. "My associate is waiting in a speed boat further out in the estuary. Once the boy is separated from the crowd, I’ll lure him toward the wooden pier under the pretext of showing him the fireworks equipment. A quick shove into the dark water, and the strong ocean currents will carry him out to sea before anyone even realizes he’s missing."

Victoria smirked, taking a slow sip of her wine. "Make sure it looks like an accidental slip. A tragic, heartbreaking accident."

"Consider it done," Malone whispered, melting away into the shadows of the resort gardens.

Meanwhile, inside the bustling marquee, Julian approached Kofi with a surprisingly warm, friendly smile on his face—a complete stark contrast to his usual arrogant behavior.

"Hey, Kofi," Julian said smoothly, offering the younger boy a glass of fruit punch. "Listen... I know I was a jerk to you when you first arrived at the mansion. I'm sorry about that. My dad was putting a lot of pressure on me."

Kofi looked at his older cousin with cautious eyes, but his innocent, forgiving heart wanted so desperately to believe that his family could be whole. "It's okay, Julian," Kofi said softly. "I forgive you."

Julian smiled, patting Kofi’s shoulder. "Thanks, man. Hey, you know what? There’s a secret fireworks launching setup down on the old wooden pier near the river. The technicians are getting ready to set off giant dragon rockets in twenty minutes. Want to go check it out before the crowd gets there?"

Kofi’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like any ten-year-old boy, the promise of massive dragon fireworks was impossible to resist. "Really? Can we go see them?"

"Sure," Julian said, turning toward the dark path leading down to the water. "Follow me, little cousin."

As Kofi stepped away from the brightly lit crowd, following Julian into the quiet, dark gardens leading toward the misty river pier, Amina was busy speaking with a group of female diplomats near the stage.

Suddenly, a strange, overwhelming feeling of cold dread washed over Amina’s heart. She turned around to check on Kofi, but the spot where he had been standing minutes ago was completely empty.

Amina’s eyes frantically scanned the bustling crowd. "Kofi?" she called out, her heart suddenly pounding against her ribs. "Kofi?!"

She looked toward the dark garden path and saw two small sets of footprints in the damp sand leading directly toward the pitch-black, treacherous waters of the Volta River pier.
