Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Test

The high-tech medical laboratory at the prestigious Accra Private Hospital was clinical, quiet, and sterile. Stainless steel equipment gleamed under bright fluorescent lights, and the hum of refrigeration units filled the air.
Amina sat in a comfortable leather armchair, her heart pounding inside her chest like a frantic drum. Beside her, Kofi held her hand tightly, looking curiously at the small glass vials and sterile needles neatly arranged on a tray nearby.
Standing in the corner of the room was Dr. Arthur Sterling, a renowned independent geneticist who had been flown in directly from London by Samuel Mensah to oversee the DNA test. Samuel wanted absolute transparency to ensure Marcus could not tamper with the results.
However, Marcus was also present, standing by the glass window of the observation booth, accompanied by his personal attorney, Mr. Harold Vance. Marcus’s face was dark, heavy, and full of restless anxiety.
"Dr. Sterling," Samuel said firmly, standing near Amina’s chair. "We require a full twenty-four-marker genetic profile comparing my grandson’s DNA with sample tissues saved from my late son Kwame’s medical records."
"Of course, Mr. Mensah," Dr. Sterling replied in a crisp British accent. "We have retrieved the certified cryo-preserved blood sample from Kwame Mensah's estate vault. We will draw a fresh blood sample from young Kofi today. The automated comparative analysis will take approximately six hours."
Dr. Sterling approached Kofi with a gentle smile. "Alright, young man, just a tiny pinch on your arm. You're going to be very brave, okay?"
Kofi didn't flinch. He looked straight into his mother's eyes as the doctor drew a small vial of red blood. "I'm brave like my daddy, right, Mama?" Kofi whispered.
Amina kissed the top of his head, tears of pride brimming in her eyes. "Yes, my love. You are braver than anyone I know."
Outside the glass booth, Marcus turned to his attorney, Mr. Vance, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "Vance, if that test comes back positive, it's over for us. The old man will hand thirty percent of the voting shares to that woman. She'll side with Samuel on every board vote, and they’ll vote me out of the company entirely!"
Vance rubbed his chin thoughtfully, his eyes dark and scheming. "Don't worry, Marcus. I've already made arrangements with one of the lab technicians on duty. For fifty thousand dollars, he will swap young Kofi's blood sample with a contaminated sample. The test will return an inconclusive result, declaring him a genetic mismatch."
Marcus’s eyes lit up with wicked joy. "Is the technician reliable?"
"He's deeply in debt," Vance smirked. "He’ll do exactly as he’s told. By tonight, the old man will believe she’s a fraud, and she’ll be thrown out onto the streets."
Hours passed slowly. Amina, Kofi, and Samuel waited in the hospital’s private executive lounge. Samuel had ordered a lavish spread of fresh fruit, sandwiches, and warm tea, trying his best to keep Kofi entertained with stories of Kwame’s childhood adventures.
Meanwhile, deep inside the automated laboratory, a shadowy figure in a white lab coat sneaked into the cold storage room. The technician quickly located the vial marked 'KOFI MENSAH - SAMPLE A-14' and pulled an identical vial filled with synthetic animal blood from his pocket.
Just as his trembling fingers were about to swap the vials, a heavy hand slammed down onto his shoulder!
The technician gasped in terror, spinning around to find two towering, suit-wearing security guards standing right behind him, along with Samuel Mensah’s Chief of Security, Captain Ray Knox.
"Looking for this?" Captain Knox asked in a cold, metallic voice, holding up a sleek digital recording device that was currently playing a crystal-clear audio recording of Vance offering the fifty-thousand-dollar bribe in the hallway.
The technician’s face turned completely ghostly white. "I... I was just... please don't call the police!" he stammered, dropping to his knees in terror.
"You're going to prison," Knox said coldly, motioning for the guards to drag the technician away. "And your boss is going down with you."
At six o'clock in the evening, Dr. Sterling stepped into the private executive lounge carrying a sealed white folder. Samuel stood up immediately, while Amina gripped the arms of her chair, her entire body rigid with tension. Marcus and Vance stepped into the room as well, a subtle, triumphant smirk playing on Marcus’s lips.
"Dr. Sterling," Samuel asked, his voice thick with anticipation. "What are the results?"
Dr. Sterling unsealed the envelope and pulled out the official certified document. He looked up, his eyes shining with complete certainty.
"The results are absolute, Mr. Mensah," Dr. Sterling declared loudly. "The genetic probability that young Kofi is the biological son of the late Kwame Mensah is 99.999%. He is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, your grandson and the legal heir to the Mensah bloodline."
Amina let out a long, shuddering breath, bursting into tears of pure relief as she pulled Kofi into a fierce, protective embrace. Samuel fell to his knees once more, laughing and weeping with joy.
Marcus stared in absolute horror. "No! That's impossible! Check the samples again! The test is rigged!"
"The only thing that was rigged, Marcus," Captain Knox’s deep voice echoed from the doorway as he stepped into the room accompanied by two armed police officers, "was your attempt to bribe the lab technician."
Knox clicked a button on a tablet, playing the crystal-clear recording of Vance and Marcus planning the fraud in the hallway.
Samuel stood up slowly, his face turning from joy to pure, icy thunder as he glared at his eldest son. "You tried to falsify my grandson's bloodline?" Samuel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You tried to rob your dead brother's child?"
"Father... wait! I can explain!" Marcus panicked, backing away as the police officers stepped forward.

"Save it for the police, Marcus," Samuel growled darkly. "You are hereby stripped of all executive authority in Mensah Global Enterprises. Officers, arrest Mr. Vance for conspiracy and fraud. As for my son... take him out of my sight before I destroy him myself!"
As the police cuffed attorney Vance and escorted a humiliated, furious Marcus out of the hospital, Amina held Kofi tight. They had survived the first major attack, but she knew that a wounded rat in a corner was more dangerous than ever.
