Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s Paranoia and the Crack in the Alliance

While Grant sat trapped in the courtroom, Vanessa Vance sat in her mother’s suburban living room in West Hartford, refreshing news feeds on her phone every thirty seconds. Her hands trembled as she read live-blogged updates from the courthouse steps: *‘Judge Harrison denies defense motion; forensic audit reveals offshore transfers linked to Sterling and associates.’*
“Associates,” Vanessa whispered aloud to the empty room. Her own name wasn’t mentioned yet, but she knew how federal investigators operated. They followed the money trails until they hit bedrock, and Vanessa’s name was on several key LLCs that received consulting fees from Grant’s development accounts.
Her phone rang. It was an unrecognized number with a Washington D.C. area code. Hesitantly, she pressed accept.
“Is this Vanessa Vance?” a smooth, cold voice asked.
“Who is this?” Vanessa demanded, her voice pitching upward in panic.
“This is Special Agent Miller, Federal Financial Crimes Division,” the voice replied evenly. “We are reviewing disbursements from Sterling Developments LLC to personal accounts registered in your name between 2021 and 2024 totaling four hundred thousand dollars. We would like to schedule an interview at our Hartford field office this afternoon.”
Vanessa’s breath hitched. Her phone slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor before sliding under the sofa. The screen remained lit, displaying the active call before disconnecting with a digital click.
She stood up, pacing the room in absolute horror. Grant had promised her protection. Grant had promised her that his corporate empire was too big to fail, that Nora was a harmless nobody who would crawl away into the woodwork.
Instead, Nora Miller had returned with an army, federal backing, and undeniable proof that the man Vanessa had hitched her wagon to was nothing more than a common thief and a fraud.
Without thinking, Vanessa grabbed her car keys and her designer handbag, rushed out the front door, and got into her white Mercedes SUV. She didn't care about Grant’s court hearing anymore. She didn't care about the penthouse, the status, or the baby shower she had planned for next month.

She needed a lawyer. A very expensive, very aggressive criminal defense attorney who could keep her out of federal prison before the sun went down.
