Chapter 17 - The Federal Subpoena Served in Public

The restitution proceedings for Miller Construction were finalized in a closed federal arbitration session, returning full ownership and accumulated assets back to its rightful heir—me.
With Elias’s guidance and the legal backing of Marcus Vance, the firm was restructured under a charitable trust dedicated to funding legitimate reproductive health research and supporting families struggling with infertility—transforming the very pain Grant had inflicted into a beacon of hope for thousands of others.
On a crisp afternoon in late autumn, a final public notice was served to Grant Sterling in the federal penitentiary visiting room. A federal marshal slid the official documents across the scuffed plastic table, detailing the complete forfeiture of his remaining personal property, vehicles, and offshore holdings.
Grant stared at the papers, his prison jumpsuit hanging loosely from his gaunt frame. The man who once adjusted his expensive Italian cuffs on my front porch now looked hollowed out, defeated by the very system he thought he could outsmart.
“Sign here, Mr. Sterling,” the marshal instructed tersely.
Grant picked up the ballpoint pen, his hand trembling uncontrollably. As he signed his name, scratching away the last remnants of his stolen empire, he looked up through the reinforced glass partition.
“Tell her...” Grant’s voice cracked, raw and desperate. “Tell Nora... I’m sorry.”
The marshal took the papers without expression. “You can write it in a letter, Sterling. But mail call was an hour ago.”
The heavy steel door slammed shut with a definitive, jarring clang. Grant sat alone in the stark visitor’s booth, staring at his own reflection in the glass—a man who had traded love, integrity, and truth for a lie, and ended up with nothing at all.

Back in Cedar Hollow, the leaves had turned brilliant shades of amber and gold, blanketing the country lanes in a carpet of autumn fire. The weathered farmhouse stood strong against the cool breeze, its windows glowing with warmth and life.
