Chapter 13 - The Confrontation on the Grand Staircase

Vanessa walked into the ballroom, her heels clicking rapidly against the floor. She looked frantic, cornered, and desperate. She bypassed Grant entirely, stopping just short of our group.
“I didn't steal the money, Grant!” Vanessa shrieked publicly, pointing a shaking finger at her former partner. “You set up the shell companies! You forced me to sign the consulting forms under threat of cutting me off! I’m cooperating with federal investigators! I’m turning over all the digital records from your personal laptop!”
Grant’s jaw dropped. He stared at Vanessa as if she were a total stranger. “Vanessa... you treacherous little bitch. We swore an oath—built an empire together—”
“An empire built on theft and forged medical records isn't an empire, Mr. Sterling,” Special Agent Miller stepped forward from the federal agents flanking Vanessa, holding up an official arrest warrant. “Grant Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of estate assets, and conspiracy to commit medical tampering.”
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding fury. Photographers swarmed the base of the grand staircase, capturing every angle of Grant’s utter collapse. The arrogant real estate mogul, who had discarded his wife like trash six months ago, stood paralyzed, mouth open, his life’s work disintegrating before his very eyes.
Grant looked from the federal agents to Vanessa, then across to Elias, and finally settled his terrified gaze on me. Standing there, radiant and expecting twins, I represented the exact life he had tried to destroy—and the instrument of his absolute ruin.
“Nora...” Grant whispered hoarsely, taking a desperate step forward. “Nora, please... we were married for six years. Have mercy. Tell them this is a misunderstanding—”
I looked down at him, my expression completely devoid of pity. “Six years of lies, Grant. You told me I was good at being alone. But as it turns out... I’m even better at surviving you.”
Two federal marshals stepped in, placing heavy steel handcuffs around Grant’s wrists. The metallic click echoed sharply through the grand ballroom. As they led him away in disgrace, past the staring socialites and flashing cameras, Grant’s legs seemed to fail him, dragging across the marble floor.

Vanessa stood shivering near the pillar, realizing too late that her betrayal of Grant wouldn't save her from her own federal indictments. Agent Miller gently took her arm as well, escorting her out through a side exit.
