Chapter 8 - The Corporate Audit and the Domino Effect

The fallout within Sterling Developments was swift and catastrophic. Without liquidity from the frozen accounts, contractors walked off major construction sites across Connecticut. Cranes stood motionless against the gray sky, and unpaid suppliers began filing liens against Grant’s commercial properties.

Vanessa Vance paced the length of the penthouse living room, her designer heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor. Her baby bump was now prominently visible, but the radiant glow of triumph had been replaced by a sharp, jittery panic.

“Grant, what do you mean the accounts are locked?!” Vanessa shrieked, throwing her hands up in the air. “The contractor for the Westport plaza called me this morning! They’re pulling out! If this building project collapses, where does that leave us? Where does that leave my baby’s future?!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Grant roared, slamming his briefcase onto the kitchen island. He looked exhausted, his hair disheveled, the tailored suit from our separation now rumpled and stained with coffee. “I’m working around the clock to fix this! Some federal lunatic and my spiteful ex-wife have weaponized every loophole in the state!”

“Spiteful ex-wife?” Vanessa spat back, her eyes narrowing into venomous slits. “You told me she was a pushover! You told me she didn't have a penny to her name or a friend in the world! Now she’s rolling around with federal judges and top-tier medical teams while we’re one missed payroll away from bankruptcy court!”

“It’s temporary!” Grant insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. He walked over to the minibar and poured himself a double shot of bourbon, his hand shaking so badly the ice cubes clinked loudly against the glass. “Once I get in front of Judge Harrison next week, I’ll dismantle her claims. I’ll prove she abandoned the marriage, that she’s unstable, and that her medical reports are fraudulent forgeries!”

“And what about the three million dollars from Thomas Miller’s estate?” Vanessa asked quietly, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “My name is on several secondary LLCs linked to those funds, Grant. If federal investigators trace those wires back to me, I’m going down with you.”

Grant stared at her, the cold realization dawning on him that Vanessa wasn't worried about their love story—she was worried about her skin. The opportunistic romance was cracking under the immense pressure of impending ruin.

“They won't trace it,” Grant said defensively, though doubt gnawed at his gut. “My lawyers are handling it.”

“Your lawyers are scrambling for their own retainers!” Vanessa snapped, turning away and grabbing her handbag. “I’m going to stay at my mother’s until this court hearing is over. I didn't sign up to be the wife of a bankrupt criminal.”

“Vanessa, don’t you dare walk out on me now!” Grant shouted as she headed for the private elevator.

“Watch me,” she hissed, pressing the call button. The doors slid open, swallowed her up, and closed with a definitive, chilling ping.

Grant stood alone in the center of his multi-million dollar penthouse, surrounded by silence. His mistress had abandoned ship, his business empire was bleeding out, and across the state, in a weathered farmhouse in Cedar Hollow, Nora Miller was preparing to deliver the final blow.
