Chapter 16 - Vanessa’s Betrayal Under Pressure

Inside the holding facility of the Hartford Federal District Court, Vanessa Vance sat across a metal table from her court-appointed defense attorney, her hands cuffed to a bolted loop.
“What do you mean, they won’t drop the charges?!” Vanessa hissed, her eyes wild with mascara running down her cheeks. “I gave them Grant’s server passwords! I gave them the routing numbers for the Cayman accounts! I cooperated!”
“Cooperating doesn’t erase four hundred thousand dollars of illicit funds deposited directly into your personal LLC, Vanessa,” her attorney said flatly, adjusting his glasses. “The prosecution has you dead to rights on conspiracy and asset concealment. Your best hope is a guilty plea and a three-year sentence. If you go to trial with the mountain of evidence Elias Ward’s legal team compiled, you’re looking at ten.”
Vanessa buried her face in her cuffed hands, letting out a ragged, hysterical sob. Six months ago, she had stood in our former kitchen, watching Grant hand over my fertility records like a prize, believing she had secured a life of luxury, wealth, and effortless status.
Now, her luxury penthouse was seized, her social standing was in ruins, and the man she had betrayed for money was sitting in an adjacent cell, facing a decade behind bars.
“He lied to me too,” Vanessa wept softly into the cold metal table. “He told me Nora was broke and broken. He told me everything was legally sound.”
“The court doesn't care about pillow talk, Ms. Vance,” her attorney replied without emotion. “Sign the plea agreement. It’s the only mercy you’re going to get.”
Outside the holding room, down the long institutional hallway, Elias Ward walked past with Marcus Vance, reviewing final settlement documents regarding the restitution of my father’s construction firm.
Elias paused for a fraction of a second, glancing through the reinforced glass window at Vanessa weeping over her paperwork. He didn't smile; he didn't gloat. He simply adjusted his jacket, turned his gaze forward, and continued walking.

Men like Grant and women like Vanessa lived in a world where manipulation was currency and people were disposable commodities. They had forgotten a fundamental law of the universe: every lie has a price, and when the bill finally comes due, even the wealthiest debtors find themselves completely bankrupt.
