Chapter 14 - Grant Turns Pale and the True Identity Revealed

As Grant was being led past the grand staircase toward the exit, he caught a glimpse of a document case tucked under Marcus Vance’s arm. Emblazoned on the leather binder was an official federal crest—one reserved exclusively for senior directors of the federal financial crimes task force and special advisory panels to the Treasury Department.

Grant stopped dead in his tracks, ignoring the marshals tugging at his arms. He stared at Elias Ward, who stood calmly with his hands resting in his tuxedo pockets.

“Wait...” Grant choked out, his face turning an even paler, ghost-like shade of white as the terrifying puzzle pieces finally clicked together in his shattered mind. “Ward... you aren’t just a retired sheriff. You... you headed the federal inter-agency task force that took down the Manhattan syndicate five years ago. They called you... *The Ghost Inspector*.”

A heavy silence fell over the immediate vicinity of the lobby. Prominent businessmen and politicians within earshot gasped.

Elias didn't deny it. A faint, knowing smile touched his lips. “Some files never really close, Sterling. Especially when criminals leave their dirty laundry right across the street from my porch.”

Grant’s knees finally gave out entirely. The federal marshals caught him by his arms, half-carrying him out the heavy oak doors as his legs dragged limply against the floor. The great, untouchable developer had been brought down not by a broken wife, but by a legendary federal operator who had chosen Cedar Hollow as his final watchtower.

I turned to Elias, a soft smile breaking across my face. “The Ghost Inspector, huh? You left that little detail out over morning coffee.”

“Titles tend to complicate neighborly relations, Nora,” Elias replied, wrapping a strong, protective arm around my waist. “Besides, I preferred chopping wood.”

“Well, Mr. Ward,” I murmured, leaning against his shoulder as the flashes of cameras continued to illuminate the grand hall. “I think your retirement is officially canceled.”

“I was getting tired of splitting logs anyway,” Elias chuckled softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of my head. The nightmare was over. The lie had been burned to ash. And ahead of us lay a future built on absolute truth, unbreakable loyalty, and two new lives waiting to enter the world.
