Chapter 14 - The Mastermind Unveiled

Three days later, the Oakridge High gymnasium was packed for an emergency district-wide assembly.
Principal Higgins stood at the podium, addressing the sitting students and faculty.
“Students, after the recent disturbing events involving former student Brad Sterling, our school board has taken major steps to ensure security and integrity,” Principal Higgins announced. “We are proud to announce that Oakridge High has received a ten-million-dollar educational grant from our newest trustee and benefactor.”
The principal pointed toward the side entrance.
“Please welcome, Mr. Leo Vance.”
The gymnasium exploded into thunderous applause. Students stood up on the bleachers, cheering loudly.
Leo walked out wearing a sleek black suit. He took the stage with a calm, humble smile, raising his hand to gently quiet the crowd.
Chloe sat in the front row, watching him with a mixture of awe and genuine admiration.
“Thank you,” Leo said into the microphone. “Ten years ago, my father taught me that technology should be used to protect people, not power over them. The grant provided today will fund full STEM scholarships for every underprivileged student in this district who dreams of building a better future.”
Another round of applause echoed through the room.
After the assembly concluded, students crowded around Leo, offering congratulations and asking for advice. Leo answered each question politely, showing no arrogance or distant grandiosity.
As the crowd dispersed, Chloe approached him near the stage steps.
“That was an incredible speech, Leo,” she said softly, offering a warm smile.
“Thank you, Chloe,” Leo replied, setting his microphone down. “I meant every word.”
Chloe looked down at her shoes, hesitating. “I... I wanted to apologize again. For how everyone treated you for so long. Including me, when I stayed silent while Brad acted like an animal.”
Leo looked at her gently. “Silence in the presence of cruelty isn't great, Chloe. But recognizing it and walking away takes courage. You walked away from him before he fell. That shows who you really are.”
Chloe blushed slightly, feeling a heavy weight lift from her chest. “What’s going to happen to Brad?”
Leo’s expression turned somber. “He’s facing trial next month. Because of his age and the severe nature of cyber-espionage, he’s looking at significant juvenile detention time followed by probation.”
“Do you hate him?” Chloe asked quietly.

Leo looked out over the empty gymnasium, thinking of the quiet boy in the grey hoodie who had sat in the corner for three years.
“No,” Leo said softly. “Hate is a fire that consumes the person holding it. I don't hate Brad. I just made sure justice was served.”
