Chapter 18 - The Mercy of a Titan

The following month, graduation day arrived.
The sun shone brightly over the Oakridge High football stadium. Hundreds of parents, relatives, and community members filled the bleachers, cheering as the graduating senior class marched out in navy blue caps and gowns.
Aunt Clara sat in the front VIP row, wearing a lovely yellow dress, tears of joy streaming down her face as she watched Leo walk to his seat. Beside her sat Maya Lin, representing Vance Strategic Capital with a warm smile.
At the podium, Principal Higgins stepped up to announce the class valedictorian.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and the graduating class of 2026,” Principal Higgins spoke proudly. “It is my absolute honor to introduce our class valedictorian—a student whose brilliant mind, unshakeable integrity, and boundless generosity have changed our entire community forever... Mr. Leo Vance!”
The stadium erupted into a standing ovation. Air horns blared, parents cheered, and students threw their caps into the air prematurely in excitement.
Leo walked up the wooden steps to the stage, his gown billowing slightly in the warm spring breeze. He adjusted the microphone and looked out over the sea of faces.
He saw Aunt Clara smiling through her tears. He saw Chloe in the front row of graduates, blowing him a subtle kiss. He even saw Brad Sterling sitting far back near the stadium gates, clapping quietly in respect.
Leo took a deep breath.
“When I first walked into these halls four years ago,” Leo began, his voice carrying clearly through the stadium speakers, “I thought the world was divided into two kinds of people—those who crush others, and those who get crushed.”
The audience listened intently, spellbound by his steady presence.
“I spent years building armor around myself, believing that strength meant standing alone, hiding in the dark, and waiting for revenge,” Leo continued softly. “But true power isn't measured by how many people you can defeat. It’s measured by how many people you can lift up once you reach the top.”
The crowd fell completely silent, absorbing his words.
“Injustice will happen,” Leo said, looking out at his fellow classmates. “People will pour cold dark liquid on your hard work. They will laugh at your silence. They will tell you that you are nobody. But remember this: the storm doesn't define the mountain. Your response defines who you are.”
Leo looked toward his aunt and smiled warmly.

“Do not build power to destroy your enemies. Build power so that no one can ever stop you from protecting the people you love. Class of 2026... the future belongs to us.”
The entire stadium stood up, delivering a deafening roar of applause that echoed across the valley for miles.
