Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

During third period study hall, the school library was almost silent. Leo sat at a secluded corner table near the back stacks, reviewing real-time market data on a newly activated sleek black tablet.

A shadow fell over his table.

Leo didn't look up. “Can I help you, Chloe?”

Chloe sat down in the wooden chair across from him. She set her books down quietly. Up close, without her cheerleader crowd, she looked thoughtful and observant.

“How did you know it was me without looking?” she asked.

“Your perfume is lavender, and you walk with a light stride,” Leo replied, his eyes remaining on his tablet screen.

Chloe leaned in slightly, trying to peek at what he was reading, but Leo smoothly tapped the screen, locking it into a secure, black encryption mode.

“I came to apologize for Brad,” Chloe said softly. “He’s gotten worse lately. Ever since his dad’s company started finalizing this giant Wall Street deal, Brad thinks he’s king of the world.”

“He isn't the king,” Leo said quietly. “He’s just a child standing on a mountain of sand.”

Chloe hesitated. “Why don't you ever fight back, Leo? You’re smart. Everyone knows you get straight A’s without trying. But you just let him push you around.”

Leo finally looked up, fixing his intense gaze on her. “If an ant bites your shoe, Chloe, do you summon an army to declare war on the ant? Or do you simply walk until the ant falls off?”

Chloe stared at him, stunned by the sheer confidence in his tone. “You really don't care about high school hierarchy, do you?”

“High school is temporary,” Leo said, packing his tablet into his bag. “Character is permanent. Brad thinks power comes from making others feel small. Real power comes from letting your enemies build their own gallows while you supply the rope.”

Chloe felt a sudden shiver run down her spine. The way Leo spoke wasn't edgy or angsty—it was cold, calculated, and terrifyingly mature.

“Who are you really, Leo?” she whispered.

Leo stood up, swinging his backpack over one shoulder. He looked down at her with a soft, almost gentle expression.

“Someone who remembers what Brad’s father did to mine,” Leo said. “If you’re smart, Chloe, don't stand too close to Brad tonight. When a skyscraper falls, it crushes everything in its shadow.”

Before she could answer, Leo turned and walked quietly out of the library, leaving Chloe sitting in absolute silence, her heart pounding in her chest.
