Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

Late into the night, while the city slept, Leo sat in his dimly lit room staring at a framed photograph on his desk.
The photo showed a younger Leo standing beside his father, Julian Vance. Julian had been a brilliant software architect—the original genius who conceived the blueprint for decentralized neural networking. Ten years ago, Julian had been business partners with a charismatic young investor named Marcus Sterling.
But ambition creates monsters.
When Julian refused to sell his patents to a corrupt defense contractor, Marcus framed Julian for corporate fraud, leaked altered records to the press, and stripped Julian of every share in their joint venture. The stress and public disgrace destroyed Julian’s health, leading to a fatal heart attack months later.
Marcus Sterling took Julian’s blueprints, rebranded the firm as Sterling Global Enterprises, and built a fortune on stolen genius.
Leo touched the glass of the photo frame.
“They think I forgot, Dad,” Leo whispered to the quiet room. “They think because they buried you, the truth died with you.”
When Julian died, Leo was taken in by his father’s sister, Clara. Leo had spent every night of his teenage years self-studying advanced mathematics, quantum encryption, and economic theory. He hadn't built Aegis just to get rich. He had built Aegis as the ultimate Trojan Horse.
A sharp knock at his bedroom door interrupted his thoughts.
Aunt Clara pushed the door open gently, holding a tray with two warm cups of chamomile tea. She was a tired woman with kind eyes and grey streaks in her hair, working long nursing hours just to pay rent.
“You’re still awake, honey?” she asked softly, placing the tea on his desk. She noticed the liquid damage on his spare backpack. “Did something happen at school?”
Leo quickly covered the schematics on his desk. “Just a spill in the cafeteria, Aunt Clara. Nothing I couldn't handle.”
Clara sighed, rubbing his shoulder. “I know things haven't been easy since your father passed. And I know kids at that school can be elite and cruel. If you ever want to transfer...”
“No,” Leo said softly, giving her a reassuring smile. “I’m exactly where I need to be. And soon, Aunt Clara... you won't ever have to work a night shift again.”
Clara smiled fondly, assuming it was the sweet dream of an ambitious teenager. “Just get some sleep, Leo. You work too hard.”
After she closed the door, Leo turned back to his screen.
A notification popped up from his global financial tracker:
[STERLING GLOBAL HAS CONSUMED 88% OF OFFERED LEVERAGED LIQUIDITY]
[TRAP READY TO SPRING]
[EXECUTION TIME: 09:00 EST]

Leo picked up his tea, taking a slow sip.
“Tomorrow night is the Sterling Charity Gala,” Leo murmured to himself. “How poetic.”
