Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass and the Stiletto Heels

The kick landed before anyone in the hospital suite could pretend the tension was just another rich people’s argument.

Khloe Thorne, seven months pregnant and already unsteady from the heavy noise and suffocating perfume of the fundraising gala downstairs, backed away until the sharp edge of a mahogany side table hit her spine. Across from her stood Isabella Rossi in a tight red dress, chin lifted, eyes glittering with the cold, arrogant confidence of a woman who believed she had already won everything that mattered. For weeks, Isabella had taunted her with half-smiles, private insults, and those lingering looks at Marcus that made public humiliation feel like a slow, deliberate sport. But tonight, in this private suite on the third floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, there was no more theater. There was no more polite cruelty disguised as social charm.

"You were supposed to stay quiet, Khloe," Isabella hissed, stepping closer, her red lips curling into a triumphant sneer. "You were supposed to smile for the cameras, play the dutiful billionaire wife, have the baby, and then quietly disappear into the background with a modest allowance. That was the arrangement."

Khloe tightened one trembling hand over her swollen belly, feeling the desperate, frantic movement of her unborn son inside her. "Get out of this room, Isabella. Get out before I call security."

"Security?" Isabella let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed against the marble walls. "Marcus owns security. Marcus owns this hospital wing. He owns you, and frankly, he’s sick of looking at you."

Instead of turning toward the door, Isabella stepped forward with sudden, vicious fury. She reached out and shoved Khloe hard against the chest. Khloe lost her balance completely. Her heavy, pregnant body struck the side table, knocking over a tray of crystal stemware. A champagne glass shattered near her bare heels with a loud, terrifying crack. She gasped as a sudden spike of pain ripped through her lower back. Instinctively, she tried to catch herself on the edge of the furniture, but Isabella moved in like a predator sensing blood. With a cold, calculated glare, Isabella raised her foot and drove the pointed toe of her three-inch red stiletto straight into Khloe’s flank and lower abdomen.

The blow folded Khloe to the floor instantly. A hot, blinding pain tore across her midsection, cutting off her breath before she could scream. She collapsed onto her side among the glittering shards of glass, gasping for air, her vision blurring at the edges. Her first thought was not for the blood soaking through her white silk dress. It was not for the burning cuts on her arms. It was entirely for her child.

"Please... no... not my baby..." Khloe gasped, wrapping her arms protectively around her stomach as tears overflowed her pale cheeks.

At that exact moment, the heavy oak suite door flew open. Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway, sharp in his tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, with the gala coordinator, Elaine Parker, frozen in panic right behind him. For one impossible second, the room held completely still like a frozen frame in a horror movie: Khloe curled on the polished floor in ruined white silk maternity fabric, Isabella towering over her in violent red like a victorious demon, broken glass glittering across the plush oriental carpet, and Marcus staring into the room as if he had just walked into an inconvenient financial disaster instead of a human crime scene.

"Marcus!" Isabella cried out instantly, her voice transforming within a fraction of a second from lethal malice to breathless, trembling innocence. She threw her hands to her chest, her eyes wide with fabricated terror. "Thank God you’re here! She attacked me, Marcus! She lost her mind! I tried to talk to her about the press release, and she became hysterical! She threw glass at me!"

Khloe looked up at her husband through a blur of pain and tears, searching his eyes for outrage, for panic, for love, for anything that resembled a human husband protecting his wife and unborn child. Instead, Marcus’s jaw tightened with cold, calculated pragmatism. He took in the scene—the blood, the red dress, the broken glass—and his mind immediately jumped to damage control, stock prices, and headline suppression.

"Elaine, close the door right now," Marcus said, his voice flat, emotionless, and clipped. "Lock it. No one else comes up to this floor. No one needs to see this."

Khloe felt something inside her heart break into pieces far smaller than the crystal on the floor. It went colder than fear itself. "She kicked me..." Khloe whispered, her voice trembling so hard she could barely articulate the words. "Marcus... she kicked me... the baby..."

Marcus crouched down near her, but he did not reach out to touch her. He stayed two feet away, as if her pain were contagious or messy enough to stain his pristine tuxedo sleeves. "Khloe, stop talking. Don’t make this worse than it already is. You’re hysterical and upset. We need to handle this quietly and internally before the press hears a single word about it."

"Handle it quietly?" Khloe sobbed, gasping as another agonizing wave of pressure convulsed through her lower body. "She tried to kill our child!"

"Khloe, quiet!" Marcus snapped under his breath, leaning closer with a warning look. "Do you have any idea what a scandal like this would do to the Thorne Industries IPO tomorrow morning? Keep your voice down!"

Before Khloe could respond, another voice cut through the suffocating tension in the room like a freshly sharpened scalpel.

"No," a tall, commanding figure stated from the doorway, his tone carrying the terrifying weight of absolute authority. "What needs to happen right now is a full-scale trauma response."

Dr. Robert Hayes stepped into the room. The chief medical officer and director of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was wearing a pristine white lab coat over his dark surgical scrubs. His sharp hazel eyes swept over the scene, pinning Isabella down with a glare so cold it made the heiress instantly step back. He didn't give Marcus more than a passing glance.

"I saw the entire assault unfold on the high-definition corridor security monitor in my office," Dr. Hayes said, his voice deadly quiet and completely devoid of fear. "And if either of you says another word that delays medical treatment for one single second, my security staff will have you handcuffed and thrown into the street."

Marcus straightened his posture instantly, his corporate authority bristling. "Dr. Hayes, you don't understand. This is a private family matter and a severe misunderstanding—"

"It is a violent felony assault," Dr. Hayes snapped, cutting Marcus off without a second thought.

Then, Dr. Hayes dropped to his knees right beside Khloe. His large, steady hand settled gently onto her shoulder, his fierce expression instantly softening into something profoundly protective and tender. "Khloe, stay completely still. Don't try to move. Tell me where the primary pain is centered right now."

Marcus blinked, staring at the doctor in utter bewilderment. "Dr. Hayes? How do you know my wife's name like that?"

Dr. Hayes looked up at Marcus, and the sheer fury blazing in his eyes was no longer professional—it was deeply personal. "Because she isn't just your patient or your publicity problem, Thorne," Robert Hayes said, every word dripping with venom. "She is my niece."

Before Marcus could process the revelation, Khloe doubled over with a blood-curdling cry as a violent, crushing cramp seized her lower abdomen. Dr. Hayes immediately pressed his radio handset against his shoulder and barked orders in a sharp, practiced command tone: "Trauma team 1, Obstetrics emergency team to Suite 304 immediately! Prepare Trauma Room A! We have severe blunt abdominal trauma, suspected acute placental abruption, seven months gestation! Move now!"
