Chapter 4 - The VIP Isolation Ward

The sun was just beginning to peek over the city skyline, casting long, pale amber light across the glass towers of downtown, when Dr. Robert Hayes walked down the quiet, carpeted hallway of the hospital's private VIP wing.
Two heavy-set security guards in crisp black uniforms stood guard outside Suite 412. They straightened their posture instantly as the hospital director approached.
"Any movement?" Dr. Hayes asked softly.
"No, sir," Officer Vance replied. "Mrs. Thorne has been resting peacefully since 3:00 AM. Her vitals are continuously monitored at the central nursing station. No visitors have been allowed near the wing."
"Good. Keep it that way," Robert instructed before pushing the door open gently and stepping into the warm, dimly lit room.
Khloe was sitting up slightly in the automated hospital bed, a warm cream cardigan wrapped over her shoulders. The color was slowly returning to her face, though a dark, purplish bruise was visibly blooming along her right jawline where she had struck the side table during the fall. She was holding a warm cup of herbal tea, her gaze fixed out the floor-to-ceiling windows watching the city wake up.
"How are you feeling, Khloe?" Robert asked gently, pulling up an armchair to sit beside her bed.
Khloe turned her head, offering a faint, weary smile. "The cramping has stopped, Uncle Robert. The doctors said the baby's heartbeat is strong and steady this morning."
"That is the best news I could hear," Robert said, reaching out to pat her hand. "You look stronger already."
"I don't feel strong," Khloe confessed, her voice barely above a whisper as she looked down at her hands. "I feel like my whole life was a lie. For three years, I believed Marcus was just stressed by his work... that his coldness was just his nature as a CEO. I kept making excuses for him. Every time he cancelled dinner, every time he ignored me at public events... I told myself he was building a legacy for us."
"Narcissists are very good at convincing good people that their neglect is actually ambition," Robert said gently. "You didn't do anything wrong, Khloe. You loved a man who only knew how to love himself."
"What happens now?" she asked, her eyes searching his face. "Marcus won't let this go. He controls the family trusts, the penthouse, the bank accounts... everything is legally structured under Thorne Industries. He made sure I signed a prenuptial agreement before our wedding."
Robert chuckled softly—a low, confident sound that immediately put Khloe's anxious mind at ease. "My dear Khloe, a prenuptial agreement is designed to protect assets in a standard divorce. It does not protect a spouse who facilitates physical violence against his pregnant wife, nor does it cover corporate treason and criminal fraud."
Khloe blinked in surprise. "Corporate treason?"
Before Robert could answer, a knock sounded at the door. David Chen stepped into the room carrying a sleek black leather briefcase. He wore a sharp grey suit, his expression calm and analytical.
"Dr. Hayes. Mrs. Thorne," David said with a respectful nod. "I have completed the deep forensic extraction of Isabella Rossi's digital devices."
"Khloe, this is David Chen," Robert introduced. "He is the top corporate security specialist in the region. What did you find, David?"
David set his briefcase on the overbed table, opened it, and pulled out a clean, bound paper file along with a tablet displaying digital spreadsheets.
"Mrs. Thorne, for the past six months, you believed Isabella Rossi was simply your husband's mistress—a social climber seeking fame and financial gain," David began, his tone cold and professional. "Our investigation proves she was far more dangerous than that."
Khloe's eyebrows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
"Isabella Rossi is currently under contract with Vanguard Global Holdings," David revealed, pointing to a series of encrypted wire transfer receipts on the screen. "Vanguard is the aggressive private equity firm that has been attempting a hostile takeover of Thorne Industries for the past two years."
Khloe gasped. "Vanguard? Marcus has been fighting them in court for months!"
"Precisely," David nodded. "Isabella wasn't seducing Marcus because she was enamored by his charm. She was planted in his orbit to gather high-level corporate intelligence. Over the last four months, she successfully installed spyware on Marcus's personal laptop, cloned his security security tokens, and funneled confidential acquisition bids, board minutes, and quarterly earnings reports directly to Vanguard’s chief executive."
Khloe sat frozen, the magnitude of the revelation settling over her. "So... Isabella was using Marcus the entire time?"
"She was systematically destroying him from the inside out," David confirmed. "And she was using his vanity as her primary weapon. Marcus was so intoxicated by her admiration that he handed over the keys to his kingdom without ever suspecting a thing."
Khloe let out a dry, incredulous laugh, shaking her head. "Marcus thought he was the master chess player... and he was being played by a corporate spy."
"There's more," David added, turning a page in the folder. "Isabella's goal last night wasn't just to taunt you. According to encrypted text messages retrieved from her phone, Vanguard instructed her to create a massive public scandal involving you that would force Marcus to step down as CEO before the stock market opened this morning. The physical assault on you... was her desperate, psychotic attempt to trigger a public breakdown."
Khloe felt a chill run down her spine. The woman who had driven a sharp heel into her side hadn't just acted out of petty jealousy. She had treated Khloe and her unborn child as disposable pawns in a billion-dollar corporate war.

"Where is Marcus now?" Khloe asked quietly.
Robert stood up, his face hardening into steel. "He is still sitting in the basement holding room, waiting for my permission to speak. I think it's time we give him the answers he deserves."
