Chapter 6 - The Digital Paper Trail

The high-stakes corporate world moves at light speed, especially when blood is in the water. By 9:00 AM, as the opening bell rang on the New York Stock Exchange, news of the ongoing police investigation at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital began to trickle onto corporate news networks.
While financial analysts frantically speculated on the sudden drop in Thorne Industries stock, inside the precinct house three blocks away, Isabella Rossi sat in a cold, fluorescent-lit interrogation room.
She had traded her ruined red dress for a stiff gray orange inmate jumpsuit. Her makeup was smeared across her pale face, her designer hair tangled and unkempt. Across the steel table sat Lead Detective Miller and Assistant District Attorney Sarah Vance.
"Miss Rossi, let's go over this one more time," Detective Miller said, tapping a pen against his notepad. "You claim Mrs. Khloe Thorne attacked you first inside Suite 304?"
"Yes!" Isabella snapped, her voice raspy from shouting all night. "She was jealous! She knew Marcus was leaving her for me! She grabbed a champagne glass and threw it at my head! I acted entirely in self-defense!"
ADA Vance smiled thin-lipped, sliding an iPad across the metal table. "That's a fascinating story, Miss Rossi. Unfortunately for you, St. Jude's Memorial Hospital modernizes its security systems annually. Suite 304 is equipped with high-definition 4K optical surveillance cameras in the entry foyer and hallway, as well as audio recording sensors installed for patient safety."
Isabella's eyes flicked to the screen in sudden panic.
"We have reviewed the footage," Detective Miller said coldly. "At 11:42 PM, you cornered Mrs. Thorne against a side table. You verbally harassed her. When she asked you to leave, you shoved her onto the glass. And then, while she was on the floor cradling her pregnant abdomen, you deliberately drove your high-heeled shoe into her abdomen."
"That... that video is altered!" Isabella stammered, her voice pitching high in desperation. "Marcus will tell you! Marcus was there!"
"Mr. Marcus Thorne has already given a formal statement under oath," ADA Vance revealed, leaning forward. "He confirmed that Mrs. Thorne was on the floor when he entered, and that you made immediate claims of self-defense that were contradicted by the physical evidence. Furthermore, forensic specialists have completed a full extraction of your mobile phone."
Isabella went completely rigid. "My phone was seized illegally!"
"Your phone was seized as primary evidence in an ongoing felony assault investigation," Detective Miller corrected. "And what we found on your phone goes far beyond an assault charge, Miss Rossi. We retrieved over four hundred encrypted messages between you and Arthur Pendelton, the CEO of Vanguard Global Holdings."
Isabella swallowed hard, her throat suddenly bone-dry.
"You were receiving monthly payments of one hundred thousand dollars into a Swiss account under the corporate name 'Crimson Silk LLC'," ADA Vance detailed, reading directly from the financial audit report. "In exchange, you provided Vanguard with trade secrets, internal financial audits, and strategic merger documentation stolen from Marcus Thorne's personal devices."
"I... I want my lawyer," Isabella squeaked, her former arrogance crumbling into terrifying reality.
"Your lawyer is in the lobby, Miss Rossi," ADA Vance said, gathering her papers. "And he just informed us that Vanguard Global Holdings has officially released a public statement completely denying any association with you. They called you a rogue independent contractor. In short... they threw you to the wolves."
Isabella buried her face in her cuffed hands, letting out a pathetic, muffled sob. The ruthless social climber who had dreamed of taking Khloe's place as the undisputed queen of high society was now looking at a minimum of ten years in a state penitentiary for felony assault, corporate espionage, and conspiracy.
Meanwhile, back at St. Jude's Memorial Hospital, Marcus Thorne walked through the private entrance of the VIP wing. He looked like a ghost of his former self. His suit was wrinkled, his shadow heavy, his confidence completely obliterated.
Two security guards stopped him ten feet from Khloe's door.
"Mr. Thorne," Officer Vance stated firmly. "Dr. Hayes has granted you a ten-minute supervised visit with Mrs. Thorne. You will not step closer than six feet to her bed. If you raise your voice or cause emotional distress, you will be forcibly escorted from the building."
Marcus nodded weakly, his pride completely stripped away. "I understand. Please... just let me see her."
The door was unlocked, and Marcus stepped into the quiet room. Khloe was sitting near the window, looking serene and composed in a soft knit dress. Beside her stood Dr. Robert Hayes, looking like a silent, immovable wall of protection.

Marcus took three hesitant steps into the room and stopped, his gaze falling upon Khloe's bruised face.
"Khloe..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with genuine emotion for the first time in years. "I... I don't even know where to begin."
