Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Corporate Penthouse

The basement holding room was stifling. Marcus Thorne had discarded his bowtie hours ago, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hair disheveled. He had spent eight agonizing hours in total isolation, devoid of news, stock tickers, or communication with his legal staff.
When the heavy oak door finally unlocked with a metallic click, Marcus jumped to his feet immediately.
Dr. Robert Hayes walked into the room alone, holding a heavy manila folder under his arm. He stepped inside and allowed the door to click shut behind him, standing tall and unimpressed by the billionaire's furious stance.
"It's about time, Hayes!" Marcus spat, stepping forward aggressively. "Do you have any idea what time it is? The stock market opens in thirty minutes! My executive team is frantic! You have illegally detained me in this room for—"
"Sit down, Marcus," Robert commanded in a voice so terrifyingly quiet that Marcus stopped mid-sentence.
"Don't command me!" Marcus shouted. "How is Khloe? How is my son?"
"Your son is alive, no thanks to you or your mistress," Robert said, stepping up to the small table in the center of the room and dropping the manila folder onto the surface with a loud thud. "And Khloe is awake. She knows everything."
Marcus exhaled a heavy breath, rubbing his forehead. "Look, Hayes... I know last night looked horrible. I panicked. I saw glass, I saw blood, and I knew the paparazzi were waiting outside the hospital gates. I made a bad call in the heat of the moment. But I love my wife! I will buy her whatever she wants. I'll buy her a villa in the South of France. I'll double her personal trust account today!"
Robert stared at him with unadulterated disgust. "You truly believe every human soul has a purchase price, don't you? You think a penthouse in France can erase the image of your pregnant wife bleeding on a floor while you asked how to protect your stock price?"
"I am a CEO, Hayes! That is how my brain works!" Marcus argued, pacing back and forth. "I handle crises! I manage risk! Isabella made a mistake, she got emotional—"
"Isabella didn't make a mistake, Marcus," Robert interrupted cleanly. "Isabella is a corporate operative hired by Vanguard Global."
Marcus froze. His head snapped toward Robert, his eyes widening in total shock. "What did you just say?"
"Open the folder," Robert instructed calmly.
Marcus stepped forward with shaking hands and opened the file. Inside were high-resolution printouts of encrypted text logs, wire transfers from offshore shell companies, and detailed forensic logs showing data transfers from Marcus's personal laptop directly to the CEO of Vanguard Global Holdings—his arch-nemesis in the business world.
"This... this can't be real," Marcus stammered, his face draining of all color as he scanned the pages. "Isabella... she told me she loved me. She told me I was the only man who understood her..."
"Isabella Rossi was paid two million dollars up front by Vanguard to infiltrate your life," Robert explained with brutal clarity. "She spent six months feeding them your confidential board decisions, your private earnings projections, and the secret valuation metrics for your upcoming IPO. Every single move Vanguard made against Thorne Industries over the past quarter was powered by information you whispered into your mistress's ear in bed."
Marcus collapsed back into his chair, his hands trembling violently as the magnitude of his foolishness crushed him. The arrogant, invincible billionaire was suddenly exposed as a pathetic, easily manipulated fool.
"She... she used me," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking. "Everything... my whole empire... she was feeding it to Vanguard..."
"And last night," Robert continued mercilessly, "when she realized Khloe was beginning to see through her game, she tried to create a scandal so violent and horrific that it would force your board of directors to strip you of your CEO position this morning. She was going to frame Khloe for assault, ruin your reputation, and hand Thorne Industries to Vanguard on a silver platter. And what did you do, Marcus? You stood beside the woman who was bankrupting you and scolded your wife for crying out in pain."
Marcus buried his face in his hands, letting out a choked, desperate sound that was half-groan, half-sob. The realization was a poison creeping through his veins. He had traded his loyal, loving wife—a woman who had stood by him before he possessed billions—for a mercenary snake who had stripped him of his dignity and his company.
"I need to speak to the police," Marcus gasped, looking up with hollow, terrified eyes. "I need my lawyers. I have to stop Vanguard! The market opens in twenty minutes!"
"The police are already waiting upstairs to interview you, Marcus," Robert said coldly. "Not about Vanguard, but about your attempt to obstruct justice and cover up a violent felony in Suite 304. As for Thorne Industries... your board of directors has already been notified of the ongoing police investigation. They called an emergency session ten minutes ago."
Marcus stared at Robert in sheer terror. "What? No... they can't do that without me!"
"They can, and they did," Robert replied with a grim smile. "Khloe holds ten percent of the voting shares through her family trust—shares you tried to minimize for years. Ten minutes ago, from her hospital bed, Khloe signed a proxy vote authorizing your Chief Operating Officer to assume emergency control of the company."
Marcus felt the ground open up beneath him. In less than twelve hours, he had lost his wife, his unborn child, his reputation, and now, the very empire he had sacrificed his soul to build.

"Khloe did that?" Marcus whispered, unable to comprehend his wife's decisive action.
"The woman you tried to quiet has spoken," Robert said, reaching out to pick up his folder. "And she just took your company away from you."
