Chapter 2 - The Cold Calculation of a Billionaire

The hospital corridors burst into frantic motion the instant Dr. Robert Hayes issued the emergency command. Within seconds, a wave of specialized trauma nurses, respiratory therapists, and senior obstetric specialists flooded Suite 304, pushing past Marcus Thorne as if he were nothing more than an inconvenient shadow standing in the hallway.
Khloe was lifted onto a high-tech emergency gurney with painstaking, surgical precision. Every movement was carefully calculated by the medical staff to minimize spinal shift and protect the fragile life battling inside her abdomen. She gripped the stainless steel side rail with knuckles turned chalk-white, tears pouring uncontrollably down her bruised cheeks as another excruciating cramp rippled through her core.
"Hang on, Khloe. Stay right here with me," Dr. Hayes commanded gently, his fingers firmly wrapped around her wrist, monitoring her racing pulse directly while pushing the gurney himself alongside the trauma team. "Focus on my voice. Breathe slowly through your nose. We are getting you straight to Obstetrics Trauma Room A. The fetal heart rate monitor is already spooling up."
Marcus tried to step alongside the gurney, reaching out a hand toward Khloe's arm, but Dr. Hayes blocked his path with a rigid arm, stopping the billionaire dead in his tracks.
"Marcus, please..." Khloe gasped out between ragged breaths, staring at her husband with eyes filled with unbearable heartache and betrayal. "How could you... how could you look at her first?"
"Khloe, I'm trying to protect our family!" Marcus blurted out, his voice tinged with frustration rather than genuine panic. "If this leaks to the press right now, Thorne Industries stock will plummet twenty percent at market open! You aren't thinking logically!"
"That is enough!" Dr. Hayes roared, turning on Marcus with a gaze that could wither steel. "You will stay right here where my armed hospital security officers place you! You forfeited every single right to stand beside this woman or touch her gurney the exact moment you prioritized public relations over her life and the life of your child!"
"I am her husband, Hayes!" Marcus demanded, stepping forward aggressively, his tailored tuxedo jacket parting to reveal his expensive watch and broad chest. "And I am the chief donor who funded this entire pediatric wing! You cannot order me around in my own institution!"
"This is not your institution, Thorne. This is a medical facility dedicated to saving lives, and right now, you are a toxic liability," Robert Hayes said flatly, signaling to two imposing, armed hospital security officers standing at the end of the corridor. "Escort Mr. Thorne to the isolated family holding lounge on the basement floor. Strip him of all visitor privileges until I personally clear him. If he attempts to leave that room or access the main elevators, arrest him for trespassing and interference with emergency medical operations."
Marcus’s jaw dropped in sheer disbelief as two heavyweight security officers locked their grips under his elbows, pulling him backward. "Are you out of your mind?! You can't detain me! I'll have your medical license revoked by sunrise!"
"Try it," Robert said coldly, turning his back on Marcus without a second thought as the gurney doors slammed shut behind him, sealing Khloe into the sterile sanctuary of Trauma Room A.
Meanwhile, in the private suite above, Isabella Rossi was not enjoying her temporary victory. Two female officers from the city police department, accompanied by hospital security officers, had already pinned her against the wall. Her sleek red dress was rumpled, her designer heels scraped uselessly against the floorboards, and her perfectly manicured wrists were snapped into heavy steel handcuffs.
"Unchain me this instant!" Isabella screamed, her voice shrill and shrill as she wriggled violently against the officers. "Do you have any idea who I am?! I am Isabella Rossi! My father sits on the governor's advisory council! Marcus Thorne will fire every single one of you before midnight!"
"Ma'am, you have the right to remain silent," the female lead officer stated calmly, double-locking the cuffs with a metallic click. "You are under arrest for felony aggravated assault on a pregnant individual and assault with a deadly weapon—specifically, those high heels. Everything you say right now is being recorded on my body camera."
Downstairs in the grand ballroom, the annual St. Jude’s Benefactor Gala was reaching its chaotic climax. Hundreds of wealthy donors, high-society elites, and local politicians were sipping vintage champagne and clapping politely, completely oblivious to the bloody drama unfolding four floors above them. Elaine Parker, the lead gala coordinator, scurried down the grand spiral staircase with pale skin and shaking hands, attempting to maintain an artificial mask of corporate calm.
"Is everything all right upstairs, Elaine?" a high-profile investor asked, holding up a glass of wine. "We were told Marcus Thorne was about to give his keynote speech."
"Mr. Thorne has been... temporarily delayed due to an urgent corporate transaction," Elaine stammered, sweating profusely under her heavy foundation. "Please, continue enjoying the orchestra!"
Back in the basement holding room, Marcus paced the floor like a caged panther. The room was sterile and silent, equipped with nothing more than a couple of leather armchairs and a muted television. He pulled out his encrypted smartphone to call his legal team, only to realize there was zero cell service in the shielded subterranean room.
He slammed his fist against the solid oak door. "Let me out of here! I need my phone!"
Outside, a silent guard merely crossed his arms, ignoring the billionaire's demands completely.
For the first time in ten years, Marcus Thorne was entirely stripped of his wealth, his influence, and his control. Sitting in the silence of that fluorescent-lit room, the sickening reality of what had transpired began to penetrate his thick armor of corporate narcissism. He remembered the look in Khloe's eyes—not just the raw physical agony of the assault, but the devastating realization that when she was bleeding on the floor, he had looked at Isabella and asked how to contain the news.

He had not checked her pulse. He had not dropped to his knees. He had calculated the financial blowback of a domestic scandal.
"God," Marcus muttered, running both hands through his slicked-back hair, ruining his pristine appearance as terror finally crept into his gut. "What have I done?"
