Chapter 11 - The Billionaire's Fortress

The federal safehouse outside the city was a heavily fortified limestone estate surrounded by rolling hills and patrolled by armed federal agents, but I didn't spend the night sleeping. While my mother and Lily rested safely in the secure east wing, I sat at a stainless-steel desk surrounded by glowing monitors, analyzing the decrypted financial packets Miller had retrieved from Arthur Pendelton’s personal laptop.
"Thorne is moving faster than we anticipated," Miller said, dropping a thick dossier onto the desk beside my keyboard. "Ever since the raid at your house failed and Pendelton was taken into custody, Thorne’s legal team has filed four emergency injunctions trying to freeze the federal grand jury proceedings."
"They're terrified," I replied without looking up from the scrolling rows of cryptocurrency wallets and offshore wire ledgers. "Thorne spent twenty years building a pristine political image as a philanthropist and green-energy pioneer. If the public finds out his empire was built on embezzled trust funds and cartel-backed shell companies, his entire political coalition collapses."
Elena walked into the study holding two cups of black coffee, handing one to me before leaning over the desk. "The grand jury convenes tomorrow morning at nine. You are scheduled as the primary expert witness to present the forensic audit. Are you ready, Claire?"
"Born ready," I said, taking a sip of the bitter coffee. "Marcus thought he could break me with a slap to the face four days after childbirth. Thorne thought he could silence me with a midnight tactical raid. By noon tomorrow, I’m going to enter the courtroom and lay out every single transaction down to the last penny."
"There's just one complication," Miller noted grimly, tapping a digital map on the side monitor. "Marcus hasn't been recaptured yet. After his transport van was hit, our intelligence suggests he was smuggled directly into one of Thorne’s private waterfront estates on the harbor. He’s armed, desperate, and completely unhinged."
I stared at the blinking red marker on the map representing Marcus’s last known location. A cold, determined calm settled over me.

"Let him come," I whispered. "This time, there won't be any lawyers to save him."
